Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Ignis x Siegbert C

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and let’s go eat some wild strawberries.

Here’s the support conversation between Ignis and Siegbert for the C level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Siegbert: Ignis, you really are courageous warrior. / ジークベルト: イグニス。君は本当に勇敢な戦士だね。

Ignis: … What’s with you all of a sudden? / イグニス: …突然、どうした?

Siegbert: You’re always out in the front lines of battle, protecting people … / ジークベルト: 戦場では常に前線へと出て、己の身を盾にして、人々を守る…

I think you’re very model of a soldier. / そんな君の姿は戦士の鑑だと思う。

Ignis: I’m only doing what comes naturally … / イグニス: 俺は当然のことをしているだけだ…

‘Cause all I can do is stick my neck out and hope for the best … / この体を張ることくらいしか、俺にはできないからな…

Siegbert: So it’s natural to stick your neck out for others … / ジークベルト: 体を張るのが当然のことか…

I want to become a brave warrior just like you. / 私もイグニスのような勇敢な戦士になりたいよ。

Ignis: You’ve bought too much stock in me … there are plenty of soldiers who are far superior to me … / イグニス: 買いかぶり過ぎだ…俺より優れた戦士はたくさんいる…

And everyone’s got their own role. You’ve no need to be out in the front lines fighting. / それに人にはそれぞれ役割がある。ジークベルトが前線に出て戦う必要はない。

That’s a role for someone like me … / そういうのは、俺みたいな奴の役割だ…

Siegbert: What do you mean by that? / ジークベルト: どういうことだい?

Ignis: ………… / イグニス: …………

Nah, never mind … forget about it … / いや、なんでもない…忘れてくれ…

Siegbert: Ignis … ? Seems like he wanted to tell me something … / ジークベルト: イグニス…?何か、言いたげだったような…

Translation end!

Translation notes: This is mostly extremely straightforward, but I translated the first use of the word 戦士 (senshi) as warrior, because I figured it just flowed better and was closer to the image of courageous, and the others as soldier because it seemed to fit the meaning/nuance better in those places. It can be translated either way, so I figure why not go with the best for the sentence? In any case, if I need to change anything, you’ll let me know in the comments below, right?

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/13/2016

Here are my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/13/2016. I see some new people have been commenting recently. Thanks much to new and old commenters! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On:

Well, I didn’t really have a goal because of the internet issues, but I still got a ton translated:

Hinata x Orochi C

Hinata x Orochi B

Hinata  x Orochi  A

Hinata x Orochi S

Ophelia x Shalla C

Ophelia x Shalla B

Ophelia x Shalla A

Kamui (M) x Sakura C

Ignis x Nyx C

Ignis x Matoi C

Asama x Mozume C

Nyx Skinship Lines

Shigure Skinship Lines

As well, big news! I got a request to do a second game, which is Angelique for the SNES/SFC. So obviously Fire Emblem Fates will continue to be the main attraction until it’s done. Once it is done, Angelique will be the main project, but until then, when I have some free time, I’ll be working on it in spurts, so as not to conflict with Fire Emblem Fates. Look for the first Angelique translations sometime soon.

Today’s Goals

  • Clear up older translations and incorporate feedback to edit them as well catch up on the site. I did a lot of translations while I couldn’t access the internet because the material is on my hard drive, but since I couldn’t access the site, I couldn’t correct older translations. I got a lot of feedback in those two days as well, so I thought I’d take a day to catch up on the backlog.

Possible Complications: Still got paying work to do.

How you can help out: Well, there was a bevy of new translations posted today. Any feedback and criticism is welcome!

Jobs I Need Done

  • I will always and forever need people to comment on my translations as much they can.
  • Vote! It’s spoiler free. If you’re waiting for the translation patch, these polls aren’t going to ruin anything for you.
  • Speaking of feedback, we had discusses before how to do translations of the different personality types for Kamui, the player character. I decided in the end to put notes at the end of the translation if it didn’t affect a lot of lines and to put all three personalities/politeness types together if there were many, many lines that got affected. Take a look at Kamui (M) x Sakura to see how I did it and let me know if that seems like an okay approach.

As always, there’s a page to discuss matter with others or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. It’s been updated to a new page for April. You can use that page for April to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and respect! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not. This page has also been updated for April.

Fire Emblem Fates Nyx Skinship Lines

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and don’t let the cats shed on you.

Here’s the skinship lines for Nyx. Most of these have been cut in the US/European version due to the removal of the skinship gameplay feature. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.) Please note the numbers correspond to the numbered voice file, but I cut off the beginning code, because it has no relevance here. (Anyone wanting to use this for a translation, should know where it goes by the numbers anyway.)

Ignis: Ah … yes. / イグニス: ああ…そうだ。

Matoi: Hmm … it’s a prayer for safety before you hit the battlefield? / マトイ: ふーん…戦場に出る前の安全祈願?

Ignis: … Is that so bad? / イグニス: …悪いか?

Matoi: I don’t think it’s particularly a bad thing … I just don’t depend on protective charms. / マトイ: 別に悪いとは思わないけど…あたしはお守りなんて頼りにしないわ。

Ignis: Which is to say … / イグニス: なに…?

Matoi: On the battlefield, the things I depend on aren’t something like protective charms … / マトイ: 戦場で頼りになるのは、お守りなんかじゃなくて…

Ignis: … Well, that’s certainly true. / イグニス: …確かにそうだな。

A strong spirit like you, Matoi … probably doesn’t need a protective charm … / マトイのような強き者にとっては…お守りなど必要ないのだろうな…

Matoi: A strong person … like me … / マトイ: あたしみたいな…\n強い人…

You’re a strong genius who can do anything … Matoi, you wouldn’t understand … / マトイのような、強くて何でもできる天才には…わからないだろうさ…

Matoi: ………… / マトイ: …………

Translation end!

Translation notes: This is a sad one. There’s nothing particularly special about how either of them speaks, but I wonder if there’s a better word for protective charm? In any event, if there’s something I can do to make the English flow better, let me know in the comments below.

Translation end!

Translation notes: This is a cute little conversation with not much to it in terms of Japanese translation difficulty, but I couldn’t think of a way to keep the sentence structure the same in Ignis’s last line, as it just happens sometimes that English and Japanese have opposite sentence structures, so I could think of no other way than to switch them. Ophelia: Oh, Shalllla! Hahahaaa ♪ / オフェリア: あ、シャラ~!\nふふふ~ん♪

Shalla: Ophelia … why are you grinning some silly loon? It’s revolting … / シャラ: オフェリア…なにをニタニタ笑っているの?気持ち悪い…

Ophelia: You can say whatever you like. I’m in the loveliest of moods right now, so it’s not going to get to me. / オフェリア: なんとでも言いなさいよ。今は気分がいいから気にならないわ。

I mean look! / だって、ほら!

Since our last purification, it’s been three days and nothing’s happened to me. / この前の浄化から3日も経っているのに私に何も起こっていないのよ!

Shalla: … And? / シャラ: …それで?

Ophelia: This means that my power has won out over your curses, doesn’t it? / オフェリア: これって、あなたの呪いに私のパワーが勝ったという事よね?

I knew that somehow yellow diamonds would be good. / やっぱり、黄色の金剛石を使ったのがよかったのかしら。

And the path of the stars on the day purification was just right, so it was perfect. Yes, that’s it. / 浄化した日の星の巡りといい、最高だったもんね。うんうん。

Shalla: … Or I just got so fed up with you and stopped casting curses. / シャラ: …もう面倒くさくなったから呪いをかけなくなっただけよ。

Ophelia: And I’m saying THAT was because of my powers of purification. Ahahahaaa ♪ / オフェリア: だから、それが浄化の力なんだってば。ふふふーん♪

Shalla: *sigh* … I don’t think I can put up with your stupidity any more. / シャラ: ふう…なんだかもう付き合ってられないわ。

Shalla: Okay. If you really want something with magic power, I’ll give you this. / シャラ: 結構よ。そんなに魔力があるものが欲しいなら、これをあげるわ。

Ophelia: Is this a charm? Thank you! I shall treasure it. / オフェリア: これって呪符?ありがとう! 大事にするね。

Shalla: … Are you not suspicious that I’m going to use that to curse you? / シャラ: …それを使って呪いをかけられるんじゃって疑わないの?

Ophelia: Well you’ve already been purified, haven’t you! Nothing like that could happen now! / オフェリア: だってシャラはもう浄化されたんだよ?そんな事するわけないじゃない。

Shalla: Oh praise the gods. / シャラ: おめでたいことね。

Ophelia: Gods or not, it’s all good. See you later! / オフェリア: おめでたくてもいいもーん。じゃあね!

Shalla: ………… / シャラ: …………

But to think that someone like me would prepare a luck charm for somebody … / でも、この私が誰かに幸運の呪符を用意するなんて…

Maybe I really was purified … / 本当に浄化されてしまったのかもしれないわね…

There’s no way it could be because of that charlatan’s magic or tools though … / あのいかがわしい道具や魔力のおかげだとは絶対に思わないけど…

Ophelia: Hm? Did you say something. / オフェリア: ん? なにか言った?

Shalla: Nope. Just mumbling. / シャラ: いいえ。\n独り言よ。

Ophelia: Oh? / オフェリア: そう?

Well, if you get possessed by a wicked aura again, just call my name. / また邪なオーラに取りつかれるようなら声かけてよね!

Just like that, I shall purify you. / 私がきらーんと浄化してあげるから!

Shalla: … I’ll think about it. / シャラ: …考えておくわ。

Translation end!

Translation notes: When Shalla says 付き合ってられない (tsukiatterarenai) she’s not just using a regular verb, but rather an expression of exasperation that has a heavy connotation that the person you’re speaking to is mentally deficient, too annoying to be tolerated or otherwise just a complete moron. It’s not a very nice expression at all and it’s almost used when someone is tired of having to deal with someone else’s shit. I’ve even heard it mentioned as a last line before a friendship ends. That’s why I translated it like that. Also, when she says “praise the gods,” she uses a word that was often meant that you’ve been blessed by the gods and yes, these days, it means “congratulations” or “good wishes,” but Shalla uses it in its older, more religiously oriented form. In any event, if you’ve got some feedback or constructive criticism, let me know.

Ophelia: Yes! / オフェリア: そう!

Well now, I must prepare things, so you will come to my room later. / じゃあ、準備しておくから後で私の部屋に来てちょうだい。

Her power, or my curses, perhaps we’ll see which is stronger. / その力は私の呪いとどちらが強いのかしら。

Ehehehehe … this should be fun … / うふふふふ…楽しみね…

Translation end!

Translation notes: This will be spoilers, but don’t say I didn’t warn you at the top, but if you’ve played Awakening, you’re well aware of why Shalla/Tharja is someone who shouldn’t be trifled with. Ophelia is being her usual princess-like self here. So far there’s not much in the Japanese to take note of, other than Ophelia doesn’t actually say her name, but the grammatical construction amounts to the same type of expression in English, so that why I used that. But if I’ve screwed up the English somewhere, please let me know in the comments below.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Kamui (M) x Sakura C

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and do tell what you put in this lovely pot roast.

Here’s the support conversation between Kamui (M) x Sakura for the C level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.) Please keep in mind that as the Japanese Kamui has three different politeness levels, only the lines where it makes something of a difference in the translation are noted below the complete translation, but the primary translation is the 僕 (B) personality.

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Kamui: Hey, Sakura! Ya doing okay? / カムイ: やあ、サクラ。元気かい?

Sakura: I’m … it’s … that is … yes. / サクラ: えと…あの…その………はい。

Kamui: O-oh? I sense some hesitation, you’re not coming down with something are you? / カムイ: あ、あれ? ちょっと間があったけど…ひょっとして、体調でも悪いのかい?

Sakura: No … that’s not it at all. My health is really … just fine. / サクラ: …いえ…違うんです。身体はとても…元気です。

Kamui: Oookay, then what’s wrong? … Could it be I’m not wanted here? / カムイ: じゃあどうしたの?…もしかして僕、嫌われてるのかな?

Sakura: N-no! It’s not that I hate you! / サクラ: そ、それも違います!カムイ兄様が嫌いなわけありません!

It’s just … I, well, talking face to face with someone … I’m not used to it … / ただ…私、人と面と向かってお話するのに…慣れてなくて…

Kamui: Oh, oh okay. Sorry to bother you then. / カムイ: そ、そうなんだ。ごめんね、突然話しかけちゃって。

Sakura:N-no … I should be the one to apologize. / サクラ: い、いえ…私こそごめんなさい。

My brother finally speaks to me and that’s all I can say. / せっかくカムイ兄様に声をかけていただいたのに。

Kamui: Well, it’s no big deal, really. But … that’s it! Since we’re talking now … / カムイ: いや、そんな大層なものじゃないよ。でも…そうだな。せっかくだから…

What if there was something I could maybe do to help you conquer your awkwardness when speaking up? / サクラの口下手を克服できるように、僕にも何かできることはないかな?

Sakura: ……. What? / サクラ: ……え?

Kamui: It can be pretty difficult to tackle the roots of an issue like this, but if the two of us practiced talking, I bet you’d start getting used to it and / カムイ: 根本的な解決はなかなか難しいだろうけど、二人で何度も会話すれば慣れるだろうし、

maybe, perhaps you might grasp how to talk to others? / サクラも人と話すコツが掴めるんじゃないかな?

Sakura:I’m not so sure about that … ? / サクラ: そ、そうでしょうか…?

Kamui: It’s settled! Practice over theory, ya know! Come on, let’s get started now! / カムイ: うん! 論より証拠だよ。早速やってみようよ。

End of 僕 (B) conversation.

Translation supplement – The following are the lines that change with a different politeness level for Kamui (M). The basic lines above are for the 僕 (B) personality. Below you will find 俺 (O) and 私 (W) where they have a meaningful enough change to make a difference in translation:
(W) Kamui: Hi, Sakura. Are you doing well? / カムイ: やあ、サクラさん。元気ですか?
(W) Kamui: Yes! Practice over theory is the way. Let’s get started as quickly as we can! / カムイ: ええ! 論より証拠です。早速やってみましょう。
(O) Kamui: Then what? … You don’t like me, is that it? / カムイ: じゃあどうした?…もしかして俺、嫌われてるのか?

Translation end!

Translation notes: It’s important to remember that Sakura came with a quick lie to cover her awkwardness here and she’s not actually bad at speaking with others. As for the personalities, as you can see, in some places, it does make a difference in the nuance the lines are spoken in. Have any recommendations or constructive criticisms on how to make it better?

Hinata: ………… / ヒナタ: …………

Orochi: Hm … ? What’s the matter, Hinata? / オロチ: ん…?どうした、ヒナタ。

Have you come once more to feel used when I get you to massage my shoulders? / また肩を揉ませておるのが、そんなに不服なのかえ?

Hinata: Ah! No … just thinking a bit. / ヒナタ: あ! いや…考え事をしてただけだって。

Orochi: Thinking a bit? / オロチ: 考え事?

Hinata: Yeah. Until lately, you and I hadn’t talked lots, right? / ヒナタ: ああ。この間までオロチと俺って、あんまり話したことなかっただろ?

I only really thought of you as a sexy older woman, but / 俺、オロチのこと、色気がある姉ちゃんだなーぐらいにしか思わなかったけど、

I’ve been thinking, in the end, my gut was all wrong … / 結局全然印象違ったなぁって…

Orochi: What? Are you trying to say that you don’t feel like I’m sexy anymore? / オロチ: なんじゃと? それは、わらわには今、色気を感じないと言いたいのかの?

Hinata: Well, let’s put that aside for now. / ヒナタ: まあそれは置いておいて。

Before when I didn’t really get you, it was hard to speak up, but now it’s different. That’s what I’m saying. / 昔はオロチってよくわかんない奴で話しかけ辛かったけど、今は違うってこと。

When I did talk to you, you were really different from what I thought, I felt like … you were pretty cute. / 話した時に雰囲気がガラッと変わるのって、何だか可愛いなって…思ったんだよ。

Orochi: Cute? Cute? Hinata, what are you saying! / オロチ: か、可愛いじゃと?ヒナタ、急に何を言い出すのじゃ!

Hinata: Just what I mean? / ヒナタ: だって本当のことだぜ?

I … love you, Orochi. I even think you’re still sexy … / 俺は…オロチのことが好きなんだ。色気もあるって今でも思ってるよ…

Orochi: H-Hinata … ! / オロチ: ひ、ヒナタ…!

Hinata: How about you? Whaddaya think of me? / ヒナタ: オロチはどうなんだ?俺のことはどう思ってるんだよ。

Orochi: Th-that’s … / オロチ: そ、それは…

Hinata: If you don’t tell me, I’ll give a REAL HARD massage. / ヒナタ: 言わないと肩を強く揉むぞ。

Orochi: Ahhh! Ouch, ouch, ouch! Stop that at once! / オロチ: わああ! いたたたーー!!それは止めい!!

Okay … I … find you quite fetching, Hinata. / そうじゃな……わらわも…ヒナタのことは好いておるぞ?

Hinata: R-really? / ヒナタ: ほ、本当か!?

Orochi: If I didn’t, I wouldn’t go through the trouble of calling on you. / オロチ: でなければ、こうやって呼び出したりはせぬ。

The way you fight, your more gentle sides, they’re all bright sides in my eyes. / ヒナタの闘う姿も、意外に優しいところも、わらわにとってはまぶしいものじゃ。

Hinata: Hmmm … / ヒナタ: ふーん…

Orochi: What an insolent reaction. And just as I had properly answered you … / オロチ: なんじゃその反応は。\nせっかくわらわも応えたと言うに…

Hinata: It’s nothing, just thought your face getting bright red when you said it was super cute. / ヒナタ: いや、顔を真っ赤にしながら言ってくれてめちゃくちゃ可愛いなあって思ってさ。

Orochi: You are not to let such embarrassing things escape your lips! / オロチ: そういう恥ずかしいことは口に出すでない!

Hinata: Why not? It’s so feminine and I’m saying I love those parts of you too! / ヒナタ: いいじゃねえか! すごく女の子らしくて、そんなところも大好きって言ってんだからさ!

… So Orochi. Here’s to a future at my lover! / …じゃあオロチ。これからは恋人としてよろしくな!

Orochi: Heh … I guess that’s it then. Count me in too. / オロチ: ふん…しょうがないのう。こちらこそ、よろしく頼むぞ。

Translation notes: Out of all of their conversations, this is one of the most straightforward, and if you’ll let me put my personal opinion in, I love the change in the way they relate to each other and how it shows Hinata really has changed to see more about other people and Orochi has come to find him “fetching” as she would say. You really ought to see how Nintendo completely revamped this conversation into something else, probably because they didn’t like Hinata hurting Orochi with his massage in that one part.

If you want to see how Nintendo wrote some of the most embarrassingly bad dialogue possible, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed that here.

Translation start:

Hinata: Yo, Orochi. / ヒナタ:  なぁ、オロチ。

Orochi: Oh, Hinata? / オロチ: おお、ヒナタか。

Hinata: It’s about the other day, all that stuff was just you playing around with me, wasn’t it? / ヒナタ: この間のことなんだけど、あれってやっぱりお前、遊んでただけだろ!

Orochi: Yes, your shoulder massages and tea, that day’s service was something quite supreme … / オロチ: ああ、あの日はお茶やら肩揉みやら、随分奉仕してくれて最高じゃった…

Hinata: I knew it … / ヒナタ: やっぱり…

Orochi: Well, it’s not so bad, is it? / オロチ: まあ、良いではないか。

Since then, have you not come to consider the needs of your comrades a bit better? / あれ以来、仲間のして欲しいことを少しは察せるようになったじゃろう?

Hinata: W-well yeah. / ヒナタ: ま、まあな。

It was nice that they felt good when I did something for them and I’ve gotten able to see whether they need something or not. / 何かして喜んでもらえるのは嬉しかったし、して欲しい事がないか探すようにはなったぜ。

Orochi: And that’s proof that your view of the world has broadened. / オロチ: それは視野が広がった証拠じゃ。

In that way, by learning to supplant what you lack, you have properly succeeded, have you not? / そなたに足りぬものを補うという意味では、ちゃんと成功したようじゃの。

Hinata: What do you mean by that? / ヒナタ: どういうことだ?

Orochi: You take one thing … for instance sword training … / オロチ: そなたは一つのこと…例えば剣術じゃのう…

And while your ability to concentrate on that one thing is truly wonderful, you have a nasty habit of being pulled in by your obsession and not seeing the wider picture. / それに集中する力は素晴らしいのじゃが、つられて周りが見えなくなるきらいがある。

If you continue like that, one day you’re bound to be swept up by your feet head over heels into a place where you lose perspective. / それではいつか足元をすくわれかねん。

In short, I’m saying broaden your horizons, think about the conditions and people around you and then act. / つまり、もう少し視野を広げ、周りの状況や人の気持ちを考えて行動せよということじゃ。

If you do that, the strength you seek should come to you naturally. / そうすれば、ヒナタの求める強さはおのずと手に入るであろう。

Hinata: Hmm, I feel like I understand, but don’t quite get it … / ヒナタ: うーん、わかったようなわかんなかったような…

Orochi: Well, one day you’ll come to know. / オロチ: まあそのうちわかるじゃろう。

The other day as my faithful servant was absolutely not a meaningless act. / 先日の丁稚奉公も、決して無意味なことではなかったのじゃよ。

Hinata: Really? / ヒナタ: ほんとかー?

Orochi: What is this, are you doubting me? / オロチ: 何じゃ、わらわを疑うのか?

Hinata: Well I guess because of you, I did come to see where I’m lacking … / ヒナタ: まぁでも、オロチのおかげで俺の足りないところはわかったわけだし…

Guess I’d better say thank you for it! / 一応礼を言っておくぜ、オロチ!

Orochi: Hehehe … it was nothing. / オロチ: ふふん…どういたしまして。

Now then, as a sign of your gratitude, why not give me a shoulder massage? / では、感謝の気持ちを込めてわらわの肩を揉んでも良いのじゃぞ?

Hinata: That’s nothing to do with the fortune telling though .. / ヒナタ: それは占いの結果とは関係ねぇよな…

Orochi: Yikes, have I been found out? Hehehe … / オロチ: おや、ばれてしまったかのう。ふふふ…

Translation notes: The long translation notes for the B conversation really also have an effect here, so if you haven’t, please go read that if you want a detailed description of the things to take into consideration for this translation. The hardest thing to translate was 足元を救う (ashimoto wo sukuu) which is a tricky idiom even in Japanese. It’s a figurative way of saying that you fall down, but the “ashimoto” in question is not your literal feet, but your perspective, your ability to be centered or have a good view of things around you, so I translated it that way. Please do keep in mind that Hinata’s expressions like “I’ve gotten able to see” are meant to keep his rather commoner way of talking in, but of course more natural ways of doing that are always welcome. Any ideas or constructive criticism on how to improve the English? Let me know in the comments below.
