Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/2/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/2/2016.  Eternal gratitude to all the people who have reached out in support! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

Great success! I was able to translate and post a record seven support conversations yesterday, plus a list of Special Bonds dialogue that characters speak under certain conditions when you reach friendly conditions with them.

Aqua x Nishiki C

Aqua x Nishiki B

Aqua x Nishiki A

Aqua x Nishiki S

Lazwald x Soleil A

Asama x Nishiki B

Asama x Nishiki A

Anna Special Bonds Dialogue List.

Today’s Goals

  • 5+ support conversations
  • Start doing some more Skinship dialogue for the translation patch team
  • Complete and upload Fawful Friday articles

Possible Complications: Gotta finish some real paying jobs as usual. Rent’s due!

How you can help out: As always, I need feedback, even if it’s just to tell me that there’s nothing wrong with the translation. Of course you’re welcome to comment on any translation you wish, but if you see a translation with no comments, You can see updates for all the changes I’m making in the Changelog.

Jobs I Need Done

  • If you know of a place that would appreciate a link to Karasu Corps or a friend who would be interested in helping out, help spread the word!
  • As always, feedback on translations and polls is always appreciated.
  • On the Project Help page a discussion has been started about translating honorifics for Byakuya Kingdom’s characters, since they ostensibly take place in a fictional Japan. Go there (link right below this) and lend your thoughts to the conversation. I’ll of course change to whatever the strongest consensus is.

As always, there’s a page to discuss matter with others or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. It’s been updated to a new page for April. You can use that page for April to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and respect! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not. This page has also been updated for April.

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/1/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/1/2016.  Eternal gratitude to all the people who have reached out in support! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

Okay, first of all, this is not an April Fool’s joke. Yesterday I planned on doing a lot, but life has its curious habit of getting in your way. In an effort to find the missing Skinship files my computer contracted a nasty virus, somehow against both my virus programs. I spent six hours trying to rid the nasty thing from my computer. Oi vey! So this all I got done yesterday:

Asama x Nishiki C

Today’s Goals

  • Make up for lost time! Chug out translations and fluency edits like no one’s business!

How you can help out: I appreciate all the lovely feedback I’ve gotten. If you have a spare minute, drop some me more on the newer translations! It may take me a little while to incorporate them, but I will. You can see updates for all the changes I’m making in the Changelog.

Jobs I Need Done

  • Really, I knew there would be days like this, and a little setback won’t dampen my resolve or determination, but I could always use positive encouragement in the comments!

Thank you in advance for any help you give and may the ravens always smile upon you!

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 3/30/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 3/30/2016.  Allow me to bestow eternal gratitude to all the people who continue to help me *twinkle twinkle*! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

It’s been one week since we started! And we’ve come quite a ways! Yay! Thanks to all who helped so far.

Yesterday, I completed my goal to post at least five new support conversations, but I wasn’t able to complete more than that. The conversations I did yesterday are as follows:

Aqua x Ryoma S

Aqua x Asama C

Aqua x Asama B

Aqua x Asama A

Lazwald x Soleil B

I completed my goal to start doing skinship lines. The first is Aqua here. Aqua has perhaps the most lines, voiced and unvoiced, beside the main character, so if you’re wondering why there’s so much emphasis on her, that’s why.

I completed my goal of feedback responses and continued to edit translations to better reflect English fluency. You can find where I’ve made changes on the Changelog.

I also published a small article about Ubisoft confirming that CERO is behind their censorship of the Japanese versions of their games.

Today’s Goals

  • Get some translation done. I’m keeping it open today because I have lots of real life work to do (gotta eat!) and I don’t know how much I’ll be able to get to. Maybe it’ll be a lot. Maybe it’ll be a little. I’m sure there will be days like this, but fear not, my resolve shall never waver!

How you can help out: As always, if you can put mistakes and better ways to translate awkward areas in my translations, that would be most helpful. As As well, if I’ve made a change to a translation that you strongly disagree with, let me know. You can updates for all the changes I’m making in the Changelog.

Jobs I Need Done

  • As mentioned above, there’s a new Feedback page about the name for a hidden world, please leave me a comment on what you think it should be translated as.
  • As always, I need people to spread the word, so we can get as much help as possible!
  • You know what I’m going to say! I need feedback wherever solicited or on relevant translation pages!
  • There is an issue with the text resources for this game, especially where it comes to Skinship. There aren’t any for what seems to be the voice-acted lines and so I need help finding where I can get a complete set of these. Someone is helping behind the scenes to see if they can get those lines another way, but in the event that doesn’t work, I need an alternative.

Thank you in advance for any help you give and may the ravens always smile upon you!

As always, there’s a page to discuss or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. You can use that page for the remaining days of March to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and respect! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not.

Ubisoft Confirms CERO Behind Far Cry Primal Censorship, Lists Other Censored Games On Its Official Page

farcryprimal

If you’ll remember a couple weeks back, it was found that Far Cry Primal would be censored in Japan. Back on March 16th, Gamespark, a Japanese games site which focuses on information for both overseas and domestic games, posted an article regarding official word from Ubisoft regarding censorship of gore and sexual content in the Japanese release. The article is short and translated below:

Domestic PS4/Xbox One Version of Far Cry Primal Has Censored Gore and Sexual Content, Will Have “No Influence” On Gameplay

Ubisoft Japan has announced new information concerning the censorship of the Japanese domestic version of Far Cry Primal for the PS4/Xbox One. According to the official homepage because CERO declared the following 5 points ineligible for judgment, there will be differences from the overseas version:

  • Changes to expressions of the open depiction of internal organs
  • Changes to severed corpses
  • Changes to depictions of nudity
  • Changes to sexual expressions
  • Changes to scenes involving a knife stabbing a head

According to Ubisoft Japan, “This will have no influence on gameplay or story.” This game is scheduled for release domestically on PC/PS4/Xbox One on April 7th.  Please note that no information regarding censorship of the PC version was given.

If you remember the interview I translated the other day with CERO higher-up Kazuya Watanabe, he said that CERO mostly deals with console games, so it’s possible the PC version went by unscathed.

Also in that interview Watanabe said, ” … there is something that goes beyond Z, and we call those ‘forbidden expressions.’ Games that contain these expressions don’t follow our ratings, in other words, we don’t give them ratings. We decide this with the agreement of industry groups, so it’s not related to government laws. Therefore, you could say it’s a kind of censorship, but it’s only this part where we’re censoring expression.”

As for what constitutes “forbidden expressions,” Watanabe later clarified when questioned: ” … that’s decided by consulting with ‘healthy ethical standards for society.’ And because of that, ‘forbidden expressions’ are included under expressions that are allowed under the law.”

If you go to the Ubisoft official page linked above, Ubisoft Japan flat out states, “In the Japanese version, where CERO has declared the following items ineligible for judgment, we have made modifications to the way they are expressed.” And indeed, the PC version does not have this notification.

Elsewhere on Ubisoft’s site, there is information about the censorship of other titles. For Far Cry 3, under the section of their FAQ entitled “regarding the censorship in the Japanese version,” this is written:

<About points changed from the overseas version>

For the Japanese version, where expressions fell under what is defined under CERO’s ethical standards as “forbidden expressions” there have been changes in-game from the overseas version:

  • Sexual scenes, severed wounds have been altered

*Other areas are the same as the overseas version.

Interestingly enough, this information can be found on both pages for all three versions of the game, including the PC version.

Next, in the official site FAQ for Far Cry 4, under the question, “Is the Japanese version the same as the overseas version?” this can be read:

Censored Content:

  • Parts of the dialogue related to forbidden expressions were changed
  • Changes to sexual expressions
  • Changes to severed corpses

Again, the same message is posted for each version, including the PC version.

Is it just Far Cry? Nope. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate also has a notification for its changed content on its official FAQ page, underneath the question, “Are the expressions in the Japanese version the same as the overseas version?” The answer to the question? “In the Japanese version of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, in order to clear CERO’s standards, a few depictions have had changes made to them.” Interestingly enough, the PC version does not have any reference to this at all in its official FAQ.

Next we have Assassin’s Creed Unity. Under the official FAQ heading of, “Are the Japanese and overseas versions of Assassin’s Creed Unity the same?” we can see this explanation, “Missions, characters and items are the same. Except, in order to clear CERO standards, in certain videos the depiction of severed human limbs have been blackened so that they can’t be seen.” Again, the same notice appears for every version, including the PC version.

In contrast, for Assassin’s Creed Rogue, under the relevant question about whether there are changes in expressions from the overseas versions, it is stated that there are no changes. Similarly, Ubisoft Japan notes there are no changes in The Division either.

The same is true for the Ubisoft-localized Lords of the Fallen and while the question for Rainbow Six: Siege is slightly different (“Do the Japanese version and the overseas version have the same content?”) the answer from Ubisoft is yes, they are the same.

Many of Ubisoft’s older games don’t have notifications on whether or not there were changes. Perhaps they’ve started becoming more diligent about noting it due to push back from Japanese gamers? What push back you say? Well, just look at the top-rated comments in the Gamespark article:

“That’s enough! Stop censoring expressions in Z games!”

“That’s quite tepid survival you’ve got there.”

This one changed the Gamespark headline slightly to make a joke:

“Domestic PS4/Xbox One Version of Far Cry Primal Has Censored Gore and Sexual Content, Will ‘Have Influence’ On Sales”

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 3/29/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 3/29/2016.  Eternal gratitude to all the people who have reached out in support! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I completed my goal to post at least five new support conversations and begin ramping up for more than that. The conversations I did yesterday are as follows:

Aqua x Ryoma C

Aqua x Ryoma B

Aqua x Ryoma A

Felicia x Kazahana A

Kazahana x Saizou S

Lazwald x Soleil C

I completed my goal to start the main story, I’ll be dividing up each chapter into pre-battle, mid-battle and post-battle. For now I’ve done the introduction Chapter 0 Pre-Battle.

I also posted a feedback page on the issue what to name what is called 秘境 in the Japanese version. I’m not sure Nintendo’s Deeprealms translation is the best or that people want it, so if you’ve got an opinion, head on over and let me know.

I completed my goal of responding to your feedback continued to edit translations to better reflect English fluency. You can find where I’ve made changes on the Changelog.

Today’s Goals

  • Keep trying to up the amount of support conversations I can do in a day, though at least remain consistent at five.
  • Respond to constructive criticism and feedback and implement suggested relevant changes to current translations
  • Start translating the Live 2D character dialogue (when they talk to you in first person CG scenes)

How you can help out: As always, I need help polishing my translations, so if you’ve suggestions or criticisms, they are ALL welcome. As well, if I’ve made a change to a translation that you strongly disagree with, let me know.

Thank you in advance for any help you give and may the ravens always smile upon you!

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 3/28/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 3/28/2016.  Thanks again for all your detailed comments and constructive criticisms! Remember you can follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I completed my goal to post at least five new support conversations. The conversations I did yesterday are as follows:

Kazahana x Saizou C

Kazahana x Saizou B

Kazahana x Saizou A

Felicia x Kazahana C

Felicia x Kazahana B

I completed my goal to get some work done on the Current Requests page and posted a translated article about censorship in Japanese games and CERO’s role in it.

I completed my goal of uploading stuff for Fawful Friday, in particular, a Famitsu article I translated in the past about women in the Japanese gaming industry, and a series of short real-life anecdotes on gaming culture from a book called The Cry of the Soul.

Today’s Goals

  • Continue to upload at least five more pages of support conversations, to continue to be consistent, try to aim for more than that today as I’ve gotten used to the format
  • Respond to constructive criticism and feedback and implement suggested relevant changes to current translations
  • Start translating the main story

How you can help out: You can help me by continuing to give feedback and constructive criticism on my translations. As well, if I’ve made a change to a translation that you strongly disagree with, let me know. You can updates for all the changes I’m making in the Changelog.

Jobs I Need Done

  • As always, I need people to spread the word, so we can get as much help as possible!
  • You know what I’m going to say! I need feedback wherever solicited or on relevant translation pages!
  • I still need some kind soul to count the number of My Castle system menu dump files for different facilities/gameplay menus I need to translate for My Castle. In order to do so, you can use the materials in this pastebin here. (Edit: fixed, should reflect the correct link now.)
  • I got a mail about the Translations from Soul Cry article I did, but the problem is all they did was call me a retard and say it was offensive. This person currently hasn’t responded to my request for clarification on my mental faculties or why it was offensive. If someone could let me know what the actual problem with the article is that I should correct, that would be great.

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 3/26/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 3/26/2016.  Thanks again for all your detailed comments and feedback! Remember you can follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I completed my goal of creating a master list where you can find all currently translated material for Fire Emblem Fates. Hopefully, this will make it easier to navigate the site as more and more content gets uploaded.

I completed my goal to start translating other parts of the game. I started with the Arena Messages List.

I completed my goal to respond to people’s feedback and edit translations for greater fluency. These changes can be found on the Changelog.

I completed my goal to post at least five new support conversations, and finished uploading two more complete sets of support conversations, which are Lazwald x Luna and Rinka x Saizou. The conversations I did yesterday are as follows:

Lazwald x Luna S

Rinka x Saizou C

Rinka x Saizou B

Rinka x Saizou A

Rinka x Saizou S

Today’s Goals

  • Continue to upload at least five more pages of support conversations, to continue to be consistent
  • Post the first Fawful Friday posts. Fawful Friday is where I post translations that are not related to Fire Emblem Fates, but to the wider realm of Japanese-related things. I’ll be uploading some of my past stuff and translating an interview 4Gamer did with CERO, the ratings board for Japanese games. If you don’t know who Fawful is, this video should explain things to you.
  • To get a little more done with the work in the Current Requests page, which is now updated with the requests I’ve gotten.

Possible complications: I’ve got a lot of work to do today. Hopefully I can get it all done and it’s not too much.

For that reason, I’m going to hold off from replying to comments and editing translations for today, just so I can focus on these areas. Please understand that I am not ignoring you guys’ fantastic contributions, there are just times when I need to focus on other things. Please continue to give feedback, because I do see it and note it and appreciate it and I will get around to implementing it.

As well, I’ve decided that in order to not burn out, I’ll take every Saturday off for rest, because it’s my favorite day of the week. I hope this doesn’t offend you, but I think I’ll need it as time goes on and the grind gets more serious. I will devote a lot of Sunday to implementing your ideas and changes to the scripts.

How you can help out: Provide constructive criticism about the translations I post. Provide continuing feedback about site issues and what you’d like to see me focus on next in the translation. Tell me if the Fawful Friday things I post are informative, or if you’d like to see me focus on a different area.

Jobs I Need Done

  • I need people to spread the word, so we can get as much help as possible!
  • As always I need feedback wherever solicited or on relevant translation pages!
  • If some kind soul would provide the number of My Castle system menu dumps for different facilities/gameplay menus I need to translate, I would be eternally grateful.

Much love and kisses! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not.
