Eponine: Ahahaha … I just can’t stand it … / エポニーヌ: うふふふ… たまらないわね…

The site of boys chumming it up together … I could stare at them forever … /男の子たちが仲良く遊んでる姿は…いつまでも眺めていられるわ…

Soleil: Ooooh … I just can’t stand it … / ソレイユ: あああぁ…たまらないなぁ…

Eponine: … Hm? / エポニーヌ: …ん?

Soleil: … Huh? / ソレイユ: …え?

Eponine: Soleil … what are you doing here? / エポニーヌ: ソレイユ…ここで何をしてるの?

Soleil: Isn’t it obvious? I’m getting a good look at all the cute girls. / ソレイユ: 決まってるよ。可愛い女の子たちを眺めてるんだよ。

Eponine: Oh reeeeallly … Soleil, you’re such a weirdo. / エポニーヌ: ふーーーん…ソレイユは変わってるのね。

Soleil: Wouldn’t it be more accurate to say you’re the weirdo, Eponine? / ソレイユ: 変わってるのはエポニーヌのほうでしょ?

After all, you’re the one who’s going to drool over the boys and then start having bizarre daydreams. / どうせ、ここから男の子たちを眺めて妙な空想をしてるに決まってるんだから。

Eponine: Bi-bizarre daydreams? / エポニーヌ: みょ、妙な空想って何よ!?

Soleil: Those daydreams about boys falling in love with each other. / ソレイユ: 男の子たちが恋愛関係になる空想のこと。

I know all about it. / あたし、知ってるんだよ。

I’m not sure why you do it, there’s not one thing I consider fun about it. / そんなことしても、全然まったく面白くないと思うけどね。

Eponine: Excuse me!? You’re the one who isn’t blessed with the powers of imagination! / エポニーヌ: はぁぁぁぁぁ!?それはソレイユに想像力がないからでしょ!

I happen to think staring at girls is far more boring. / 女の子なんか眺めてる方がよっぽどつまらないと思うわ!

Soleil: Whaaaat!? I’m just going to pretend I didn’t hear that. / ソレイユ: なにーーーっ!?それは聞き捨てならないね!?

Eponine: Ah! / エポニーヌ: あっ!

Soleil, your big fat voice made all the pretty boys run away! / ソレイユが大きな声を出したから、男の子たちが逃げちゃったじゃない!

Soleil: You’re the one who opened your big fat mouth first! All the girls have gone too! / ソレイユ: エポニーヌが最初に大声を出したからだよ!女の子たちもいなくなっちゃった!

Eponine: Ugh, just go away! Stop getting up in my face. / エポニーヌ: もう、どっか行ってよ!あたしの邪魔をしないで!

Soleil: That’s what I was going to say! Stop stealing my lines! / ソレイユ: それはこっちの台詞だよ!

Eponine: Hmph! / エポニーヌ: ふんっだ!

Soleil: Hmph! Hmph! / ソレイユ: ふんふんっだ!

Translation end!

Translation notes: There’s an amusing amount of back and forth that didn’t survive the official translation, but in terms translation notes, I mostly used synonyms or similar expressions for some of the things they’re saying because you have to know what the cultural effect their statements have in Japanese to really translate what they’re saying underneath the pure words. For instance using the term “big voice” in Japanese is much the same as saying “if you didn’t open your big fat mouth” in English.  Similarly, just the words “girl” or “boy” can carry the connotation of “pretty boy” or “cute girl” without actually putting those words on, just because that’s what can happen when you attach 子たち (ko-tachi) or 子 (ko) to those words — it takes on a lecherous tone. In any event, if you find something that needs fixing or might be a better a translation, please let me know in the comments below!

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/15/2016

Here are my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/15/2016. To everyone who has contributed, thanks for all the help! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On:

For some reason, there’s some sort of weird bug I’m dealing with where the post won’t show up when I edit it, so I only got to edit one translation yesterday in the Changelog. Other than that though, six more supports and another Skinship done! I’m hoping I can ramp up even more than that soon, but we’ll see. We hit a milestone! 1% of all of the massive amount of support conversations are done! I imagine we’ll be hitting percentage points faster now, since I’m essentially doing about 2 full sets a day and the pace should only get quicker.

Ignis Skinship Lines

Today’s Goals

  • 5+ supports with Skinship and hopefully some main story stuff.
  • Continue to incorporate feedback into editing the translations for better English fluency.
  • Get started on Fawful Friday stuff early so that I can manage the big workload I have.

Possible Complications: Got a rather big work project I need to work on a lot if I’m going to get it done by the deadline.

How you can help out: Please help proofread my translations and let me know if anything’s wrong. All you need to understand is English! Also vote or provide feedback in the feedback posts!

Jobs I Need Done

  • I still some opinions on whether the approach I used in Kamui (M) x Sakura is a good way to handle writing in the personality/politeness types before I continue doing other translations.

As always, there’s a page to discuss matter with others or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. It’s been updated to a new page for April. You can use that page for April to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and respect! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not. This page has also been updated for April.

Foleo: I would have you give me your answer, Soleil. / フォレオ: 返事を聞かせてください、ソレイユ。
Soleil: D-Don’t be so mean, Foleo … I’m the one who’s supposed be seducing you … / ソレイユ: ず、ずるいよフォレオ…いつもはあたしが口説く方だったのに…

Also, lying about what you feel is more embarrassing … / それに、自分の気持ちに嘘をつく方が恥ずかしいって…
Isn’t that you said, Soleil? / ソレイユ、言ってませんでしたっけ?
Soleil: Now you’re teasing me, Foleo … / ソレイユ: フォレオのいじわる…

I’m going to treasure you from now on … just as much as you used to chase me around. / 今まで追いかけ回された分…これからは僕があなたを可愛がっちゃいますからね。
I won’t let you get away, my cute little Soleil. / 逃がしませんよ、僕の可愛いソレイユ。
Soleil: Oooh … I don’t know about this … / ソレイユ: ううう…なんか、悔しい…

Translation end!

Translation notes: In some places, I needed to add some of the context missing from a straight translation of the Japanese. For instance なんか悔しい (nanka kuyashii) doesn’t just mean I feel somewhat regretful about this. It’s an expression used when you don’t know if you’ve made the right choice about a decision. Like say, if you’re out with your friends and you were getting something to eat at the ice cream shop and they chose chocolate chip cookie dough, but you went with your favorite mint chocolate chip. You saw them saying how delicious their flavor was, if you’re saying nanka kuyashii, what you’re really saying is “I don’t know if I should have chosen this flavor,” not “c’est la vie, regret for me!”

Similarly, you’ll hear many Japanese say 嬉しい (ureshii) just by itself. It just means happy, but has a lot of different applications. Much like how in English there can be something of a large difference between “I’m good,” “That’s good,” and something like “It’s all good.” Here it’s very, very close to a meaning like “It makes my day” or expressing some sort of gratitude for a nice compliment, such as the classic “That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me.”

Now it is a little tricky to figure out sometimes which of the expressions the writers meant for, but if you’re native, you’re well aware that expressions like these don’t just mean “happy” or “regret.” So contrary to popular belief, that is actually the more direction translation.

Not that it matters in this case, since Nintendo just completely ripped out this entire conversation and replaced with meaningless hair styling tips. In any event, if there’s something you feel could be done about the English here, let me know in the comments below.

If you want to see how Nintendo this confession with Friday night sleepover talk about hair and removed the romantic aspect, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed the official translation of this support here.

Soleil: ………… / ソレイユ:  …………

Foleo: S-Soleil? You’re not chasing me around today … / フォレオ: そ、ソレイユ?今日は追いかけてこないんですね…

Soleil: Foleo, you really … are a boy … / ソレイユ: フォレオってさ…本当に男の子だったんだね…

Foleo: What? / フォレオ: えっ?

Soleil: When I asked everyone … they all said you were a boy … / ソレイユ: 仲間たちに確認したら…みんな、フォレオは男の子だって言うから…

Foleo: T-That’s right! I really am a boy! / フォレオ: そ、そうです!僕は本当に男の子です!

You’ve finally come to understand. Thank the gods. / やっとわかってくれたんですね。安心しました。

Soleil: *sigh* … This is such a shame … / ソレイユ: はぁ…残念すぎるよ…

Foleo: Hehehe. You might say that, but there’s nothing you can do about it. / フォレオ: ふふふ。そう言われてもどうにもなりませんからね。

Soleil: But look at yourself closely. / ソレイユ: だって、自分の姿をよく見てよ。

You’ve got big, cute, wide eyes … a delicate body that makes me want to squeeze you … / ぱっちりした可愛い目に…抱きしめたくなるような華奢な体つき…

No matter how you look at it … you look like a girl, don’t you think? / どこからどう見ても…女の子にしか見えないでしょ?

Foleo: I can’t help it if others think like that … but I really am a boy after all is said and done. / フォレオ: そう思われるのは構いませんけど…それでもやっぱり僕は男の子なんです。

Soleil: Yeah, I guess so … You are a boy, no matter what I do … / ソレイユ: そうなんだよね…何がどうなっても男の子なんだもんね…

That means I can’t seduce you … and there’s no reason to chase after you anymore … / それじゃあ、口説けないし…追いかける必要もないってことだからね…

Foleo: Let’s just be friends, boy and girl. Let’s have a normal relationship from now on. / フォレオ: これからは普通のお付き合いをしましょうね。男女の友だちとしてです。

Soleil: Yeah … sorry, Foleo. / ソレイユ: うん…ごめんね、フォレオ。

Foleo: It’s quite all right. We have solved the misunderstanding after all. / フォレオ: いいんですよ。誤解は解けたわけですから。

Foleo: Ahaha, of course. / フォレオ: うふふ、もちろんですよ。

Soleil: ………… / ソレイユ: …………

Foleo: … Soleil? / フォレオ: …ソレイユ?

Soleil: Urg … ! / ソレイユ: うっ…!

Foleo: W-what’s the matter? Are you injured? / フォレオ: ど、どうしたんですか?どこか苦しいんですか!?

Soleil: I knew it … cute, you’re cute … / ソレイユ: やっぱり…可愛い……

Foleo: Huh? / フォレオ: へ?

Soleil: Even though I now know you’re a boy, you’re still cute … I mean that last smile’s so cute it’s practically against the rules/ ソレイユ: 男だってわかってても可愛いよ…さっきの笑顔なんて反則だもん。

… That’s it! / …もういい!

You may be a boy, but that’s no problem! Feelings don’t lie and they’re telling me you’re cute! / 男の子でも問題ない!可愛いって気持ちに嘘はつけないよ!

Foleo: O-oh my gods, not this … / フォレオ: ま、まさかこの展開は…

Soleil: Yeah, that’s it … no problem … no problem at all … / ソレイユ: そうだよ…問題ないよ…全く、問題ない…

Mwa ha ha … mwa ha ha ha ha ha … / ふふ…ふふふふふ…

Foleo: T-There is a problem! A big problem!! / フォレオ: も、問題あります!とても問題ありますよ!!

Think about it. / よく考えてください。

Among girls is one thing … but a girl chasing boys around … / 女同士ならいざ知らず…男の子を追いかけ回し、

Rubbing her cheeks against him, do you think of the kind of embarrassment you’re setting me up for!? / ましてや頬ずりする女の子なんて、とんだ恥さらしですよ!?

Soleil: Oh, it’s much more embarrassing to lie about your feelings, don’t you think? / ソレイユ: 自分の気持ちに嘘をつく方が恥ずかしいと思いませんか!

Foleo: No, not this time … oh, that’s it! / フォレオ: 今回ばかりは思いません……そ、そうだ!

I just remember I have something I need to do. Please excuse me, but I need to get going … / 僕用事を思い出しました。すみませんがこれで…

Soleil: Ah! / ソレイユ: あっ!

Don’t run away Foleo! Look, I’m going to make you my cute little pet! / 逃げないでよフォレオ!ほら、いっぱい可愛がってあげるから!

Foleo: Why must things be like this? Soleeeeieeieil! / フォレオ: どうしてこうなっちゃうんですか!ソレイユーーーーー!

Translation end!

Translation notes: There are a couple of areas where I had to get a little creative to express the meaning in Japanese, so I’m not sure if they come across well in English. Do remember Foleo is a little more restrained and formal in his speech, so some of the awkwardness is intentional, but by all means if something is crossing the line into just straight weird, let me know about that or other criticisms you have in the comments below!

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/11/2016

Here are my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/11/2016. Thanks for all your help and support! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On:

I met my goal, here are the translations and Fawful Friday articles:

Kisaragi x Velour C

Foleo x Soleil C

Foleo  x Soleil  B

Deere x Joker C

Deere x Joker B

Deere x Joker A

Kisaragi Skinship Lines

Translation: Interview with Keiko Erikawa

Translation: Games are Poison for Children?

Marx/Marks Character Name Poll

Elfie/Elfy/Elfi Character Name Poll

Today’s Goals

  • Translate as much as I can even if I can’t upload it.

Possible Complications: Holy moley! It took me about 20 tries of reloading to get this “add new post window” to finally appear and who knows how many times it will take until it actually posts it. Something in my area seems to be interfering with my internet connection, because I feel like I’m some modem computer scientists used in the 80s or something. I don’t know if it’ll get better today, but if it doesn’t, I’ll be translating in the background, so that I can upload them all in a batch once it gets better.

How you can help out: Err, pray for my internet connection? Or if you’re irreligious, vaguely hope in its direction?

Jobs I Need Done

  • I will always and forever need people to comment on my translations as much they can.
  • Vote! It’s spoiler free. If you’re waiting for the translation patch, these polls aren’t going to ruin anything for you.
  • I’m going to continue to request help for the method of doing in-page links, because nothing I’ve tried so far is working!

Soleil: I could never let you get away from me! / ソレイユ: 可愛いフォレオを放っておけるわけないよ!

I’m not going to do anything scary. Trust me and leave your body in my hands. / 何も怖いことはしないからさ。あたしを信じて身を任せてよ。

Foleo: I know that’s a pack of lies … / フォレオ: そ、そんなのウソです…

You have that look in your eye, the look of a ferocious beast when it finds its prey … / 猛獣が獲物を見るときの目つきになってますから…

Soleil: Well there’s no helping the way things are. It’s your fault for being so cute, Foleo. / ソレイユ: それは仕方ないよ。フォレオが可愛いのがいけないんだから。

Foleo: Oooooh … / フォレオ: ううう…

Soleil: I really love cute girls like you Foleo. / ソレイユ: あたし、フォレオみたいな可愛い女の子が大好きなんだよね。

Foleo: I don’t know how many times I’m going to have say this, but … I AM A BOY! / フォレオ: 何度も言いますけど…僕は男の子ですよ!

Soleil: Again with that. I told you, there’s no way that such a cute boy could exist. / ソレイユ: またまたぁ。こんなに可愛い男の子がいるわけないって。

Foleo: It’s true! I really am a boy, I’m telling you! / フォレオ: 本当なんです!本当に僕は男の子なんです!

So I can’t respond to your overtures, Soleil. Please, I’m begging you, give it up! / だから、ソレイユの期待には応えられません。お願いですから、あきらめてください。

Soleil: … Fine. / ソレイユ: …わかったよ。

Foleo: What!? Y-you finally understand me? / フォレオ: え!?わ、わかってくれたんですか!?

Soleil: If you’re a boy, then I will give up on my feelings. / ソレイユ: フォレオが男の子なら、あたしのこの思いは諦めるよ。

So … prove it. / だから…証明して。

Foleo: When you say, “prove it,” … how? / フォレオ: 証明って…何をですか?

Soleil: Give me some sort of proof that you’re a boy. If you do that for me, I’ll relent. / ソレイユ: フォレオが男の子だっていう証明だよ。それをしてくれたら諦める。

Foleo: You keep saying prove it … but I don’t know how I would do that … / フォレオ: 証明と言われても…どうすればいいかわかりません…

Soleil: Well then, I have a great idea. And if you do it, you’ll have proved it to me. / ソレイユ: なら、あたしにいい考えがあるんだよね。それをすればちゃんと証明できるはず。

Foleo: Wh-what do I have to do? / フォレオ: な、何をすればいいんですか?

Soleil: Take a bath with me. / ソレイユ: あたしと一緒にお風呂に入るの。

Foleo: Wh-whaaaaat! That’s totally out of the question and you know it! / フォレオ: え、ええええ!?そんなの無理に決まってます!

Soleil: I don’t care. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. / ソレイユ: あたしはかまわないよ。何も恥ずかしくないし。

Foleo: I-I would be embarrassed! That’s completely out of the question! / フォレオ: ぼ、僕は恥ずかしいです!絶対に無理ですよ!

Soleil: Hehehe … Washing your cute little back … / ソレイユ: ふふふ…可愛いフォレオと背中の流しっこ…

Foleo: H-hell no … I just can’t listen to you anymore … / フォレオ: だ、ダメですね…もう、何も聞こえてません…

Soleil: Come now, let’s go bathe together! As two friendly girls! / ソレイユ: さ、一緒にお風呂に入ろう!女の子同士、仲良くさ!

Foleo: Oooh … and in the end, nothing changes …/ フォレオ: ううう…結局、何も変わらないんですね…

Translation end!

Translation notes: Though Soleil is using the normal word for cute, the way she says the whole sentence in Japanese comes across like “cute widdle baby” type of talk, you can see this a little by the way she attaches っこ (kko) to some of her words or adding ん (n) near the end of sentences, so that’s why I translate like that. Have any comments or constructive criticism? Let me know in the comments below, and like the last conversation, I really think you ought to check out just how different the official translation is.

Soleil: What kind of idiotic nonsense are you rambling on about … there’s no way a boy could ever be this cute. / ソレイユ: 何をバカなことを…こんなに可愛い男の子がいるわけないよ。

Oh it’s just no good … I can’t contain myself … ohohohohoho … / もうダメ…我慢できない…ふふふふふふ…

Foleo: I-I’ve got to escape … aaaauuugh! / フォレオ: に、逃げなきゃ…\nうわあああああああ!

Soleil: Oh wait, Foleo! I’ll never let you get away from me! / ソレイユ: あ、待ってよ、フォレオ!\n絶対に逃がさないからねー!

Translation end!

Translation notes: I have nothing to say. This is very straightforward. Perhaps I did make a mistake or typo with the English? Let me know, but I strongly recommend you check out the official version for comparison.

If you want to see how Nintendo didn’t just apply a liberal translation, but straight changed the entire conversation to something else, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed the official translation of this support here.

Changelog: None yet.
