Today’s Goals and Jobs – 3/26/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 3/26/2016.  Thanks again for all your detailed comments and feedback! Remember you can follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I completed my goal of creating a master list where you can find all currently translated material for Fire Emblem Fates. Hopefully, this will make it easier to navigate the site as more and more content gets uploaded.

I completed my goal to start translating other parts of the game. I started with the Arena Messages List.

I completed my goal to respond to people’s feedback and edit translations for greater fluency. These changes can be found on the Changelog.

I completed my goal to post at least five new support conversations, and finished uploading two more complete sets of support conversations, which are Lazwald x Luna and Rinka x Saizou. The conversations I did yesterday are as follows:

Lazwald x Luna S

Rinka x Saizou C

Rinka x Saizou B

Rinka x Saizou A

Rinka x Saizou S

Today’s Goals

  • Continue to upload at least five more pages of support conversations, to continue to be consistent
  • Post the first Fawful Friday posts. Fawful Friday is where I post translations that are not related to Fire Emblem Fates, but to the wider realm of Japanese-related things. I’ll be uploading some of my past stuff and translating an interview 4Gamer did with CERO, the ratings board for Japanese games. If you don’t know who Fawful is, this video should explain things to you.
  • To get a little more done with the work in the Current Requests page, which is now updated with the requests I’ve gotten.

Possible complications: I’ve got a lot of work to do today. Hopefully I can get it all done and it’s not too much.

For that reason, I’m going to hold off from replying to comments and editing translations for today, just so I can focus on these areas. Please understand that I am not ignoring you guys’ fantastic contributions, there are just times when I need to focus on other things. Please continue to give feedback, because I do see it and note it and appreciate it and I will get around to implementing it.

As well, I’ve decided that in order to not burn out, I’ll take every Saturday off for rest, because it’s my favorite day of the week. I hope this doesn’t offend you, but I think I’ll need it as time goes on and the grind gets more serious. I will devote a lot of Sunday to implementing your ideas and changes to the scripts.

How you can help out: Provide constructive criticism about the translations I post. Provide continuing feedback about site issues and what you’d like to see me focus on next in the translation. Tell me if the Fawful Friday things I post are informative, or if you’d like to see me focus on a different area.

Jobs I Need Done

  • I need people to spread the word, so we can get as much help as possible!
  • As always I need feedback wherever solicited or on relevant translation pages!
  • If some kind soul would provide the number of My Castle system menu dumps for different facilities/gameplay menus I need to translate, I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you in advance for any help you give and may the ravens always smile upon you!

As always, there’s a page to discuss or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. You can use that page for the remaining days of March to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and kisses! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Rinka x Saizou S

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk, but let me know before you go go.

Edited to version 2.0 with reader feedback. (You can find the original version replicated below.) Here’s the support conversation between Rinka and Saizou for the S level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Saizou: Rinka, about our little duel the other day.

Rinka:  We never got to see who could get the best of each other. But it was … ehehe, entertaining. /

Saizou: Yeah, it’s been a while since I got so worked up … since a duel got my blood running like that.

I’m still hurting from the thumping you gave me, but it’s a good hurt. /

Rinka: That’s because we can laugh while fighting. Both of us … the blood that runs through us is that of a true warrior’s. /

If those pacifists in our group heard us talking like this, I think they’d faint, don’t you?

Saizou:  Hahaha … they might!

But we’ve got to keep our bodies in top condition and always strive for the highest, for Lord Ryoma and the others. /

Rinka:  And I’ve got to become stronger to protect the future of the Clan of Flames … /

Saizou: Rinka … you might think it bizarre to bring this up in a conversation like this, but …. want to be mine? /

Rinka: …!!  /

Saizou:  The will to aim for ever higher feats of strength … it’s when two become one,   /

that’s when it’s possible to reach even higher, is it not? … At least I think so.

Rinka: Haha … now this is a coincidence. /

Saizou: What is?

Rinka: I had just thought the same thing. That I want to be yours. /

Saizou: Y-you do … ?

Rinka: Yep, that’s why my answer to you is of course, “Yes, sir!” /

From now on, as warriors … and as lovers, let us climb to those heights of strength together, Saizou. /

Saizou:  Yes, let’s. /

Translation end!

Translation notes:  All the talk about self-improvement and gaining strength is really hard for me to put into natural English. The only reference points I have are the horrible way marketers talk about things like “playing to your strengths” and “growing your skills” like they were some sort of inspirational speaker in PR speak, or the type of “you lift bro” muscle head lingo I’ve heard before. So let me know how my skills can grow, bro, in the comments below tho.

If you want to see how Nintendo translated in the official release, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed this conversation here.

Changelog: 8/18/2016 Thanks to the suggestions of DJ Deadly Skillz some lines have been changed for better English fluency and to correct mistakes. There are no honorifics to change in this translation. Where the meaning has changed, the original line, or version 1.0, is recorded below for posterity.

Saizou: Yeah, it’s been a while since I got so worked up … since such a duel got my blood running.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Rinka x Saizou A

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and be kind, rewind.

Edited to version 2.0 with reader feedback. (You can find the original version replicated below.) Here’s the support conversation between Rinka and Saizou for the A level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Rinka: Saizou … got a minute? /

Saizou: Rinka. What is it?

Rinka:  Is there something that started your desire to seek ever more strength? /

Saizou: Well, if we go way back … it’s all about killing my father’s enemy, but …

As I was victorious through numerous battles, I acquired the skills and spells of a ninja, /

I began to revel in my strength more and more.

I can’t deny that I’ve become wont to enjoy battle to a fault. /

Rinka: Somehow I knew we were the same.

And as warriors, that’s an important quality for us to have. We ought not to forget that …

Saizou:  Yes, if the blade is not always kept sharp and clean, it will not cut in the critical moment /

Rinka:  True. And if a blade is sharpened too much, it will fall like an autumn leaf … /

Rinka: I want to sharpen blades a little now.

… Saizou, how about it? Just this once, won’t you accept my offer of a no holds-barred duel? / …

Saizou: Why not? Actually I was thinking the same, and it was just on the tip of my tongue when you said it.

Just the thing I want right now.

Rinka: Thinking alike, huh? Interesting. Shall we ignite the sparks of our battle lust against one another?

Saizou: … Bring it, Rinka. /

Rinka: That’s my line!! Here I come, Saizou!! /

Translation end!

Translation notes:  If you sense a bit of innuendo at the end there, it’s not just you. The word choice in the Japanese is pretty suspiciously arranged. But enough talk, have at you! Let me know what you think in the comments below!

If you want to see how Nintendo completely removed any reference to physical abuse from this conversation, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed this conversation here.

Changelog: 8/18/2016 Some lines and typos have been changed due to excellent feedback from DJ Deadly Skillz, thanks for very much to our DJ. There are no honorifics in this translation. The originally translated lines, or version 1.0, can be found below.

Saizou: As I attained the skills and spells of a ninja from living through my battle victories,

I began to bask in the satisfaction of my strength more and more.

I can’t deny that I’ve become wont to enjoy battle to a fault more because of it.

Saizou: … Why not? Actually I was thinking the same, and it was just on my lips when you said it.

Rinka: Thinking the same, huh? Interesting.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Rinka x Saizou B

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and be Siamese if you please.

Edited to version 2.0 with reader feedback. (You can find the original version replicated below.) Here’s the support conversation between Rinka and Saizou for the B level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Saizou: … Rinka. /

Rinka: Well if it isn’t Saizou. /

Saizou: Sorry about the other day. It looks like I really did let the blood lust get to me.

When I had the time to think about it calmly I realized prioritizing ones comrades is what anyone would do.

Rinka: ………… /

Saizou:  If Ryoma-sama had been in your position, it’s obvious he’d have made the same decision you did …

Rinka: Nah, I don’t really let that stuff bother me. And as a fellow fighter, I can’t say I don’t understand the way you feel. /

Saizou: Rinka … /

Rinka: There are times where I get pretty heated in the midst of battle. There are also times when I am consumed by the need for victory and strength. /

Saizou: You’re … the same way too, huh? /

Rinka: Sure. Way back when I was like some stupid dog that only knows one trick; I’d rush into a confrontation with the enemy all alone and get a horrible, relentless beating for it.

I don’t know how many times I used to get walloped by the Clan Chief over things like that.

Saizou: … That would mean that I was pretty much the same as you back then … pitiful tale indeed. /

Rinka: Well, I didn’t mean it like that. I guess there are times when the correct decision is to drive results. /

… Fight as a warrior, or fight for your allies? / …

It depends on the situation, and honing in on which to prioritize is the trick. /

Saizou: So these are the teachings of the Clan of Flames … hm, I’ll keep your lesson in mind, and accept your wisdom with the grace with which it is offered. /

Rinka: Sure. Be much obliged.  /

Translation end!

Translation notes:  That last exchange is tough to translate without sacrificing some meaning. Saizou is expressing gratitude for telling the story, and conveying to Rinka that he considers it something of a life lesson and that he’ll store it for future use. I tried to express the Japanese idiom バカの一つ覚え (baka no hitotsuoboe), which can be used to say that even an idiot can have one skill or moment of wisdom they’re really good at by using the English idioms for dogs and tricks. I wonder if that’s an appropriate alternative? Got any comments or criticisms? Let me know in the comments below.

If you want to see how Nintendo completely removed any reference to physical abuse from this conversation, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed this conversation here.

Changelog: 8/18/2016 Lots of changes due to anonf4321 or as we know him now DJ Deadly Skillz patiently pointing out my mistakes and places where the wording could be better. Additionally, honorific usage was changed. Below is version 1.0. Where the line’s original meaning changed, the original line is reflected below:

Saizou: Sorry about the other day. It looks like I really did let blood thirst rule my thoughts.

When I had the time to think about it calmly, it’s what anyone would do, prioritize their comrades in arms.

Saizou:  If Ryoma-sama had been in your position, it’s obvious he’d have made the same decision you did …

Rinka: Nah, I don’t really sweat stuff like that. And as a fellow fighter, I can’t say I don’t understand the way you feel.

Rinka: There are times where I get pretty heated in the midst of battle. There are also times when I get consumed in craving victory and strength.

Saizou: You’re … the same way as me?

Saizou: … That would mean that I was pretty much the same as you back then … pitiful tale, that.

Rinka: Well, I didn’t mean it like that. It’s just I guess there are times when the correct decision is to drive results.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Rinka x Saizou C

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and buckle your meat belt.

Edited to version 2.0 with reader feedback. (You can find the original version replicated below.) Here’s the support conversation between Rinka and Saizou for the C level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Saizou: Rinka, come here!

Rinka: … Saizou? What is it?

Saizou: I’m not going to let you pretend you forgot about what happened in the last battle! /

Why did you give the signal for retreat? /

Rinka: Considering that our troops were in a state of exhaustion, surely at that point a retreat was the obvious move. /

Saizou: We were still able to fight! And if we had fought, the enemy wouldn’t have been able to run away. /

Rinka: You’re letting your thirst for blood get the better of you … Saizou. /

Hypothetically, let’s say we did do that, can you guarantee that there wouldn’t have been sacrifices on our side? /

Saizou: A few sacrifices might have been had here and there, but we should have pounded away at the enemy so they couldn’t rise again. /

And now because of you, this will affect our tactical situations from here on out … !

Rinka: ………… /

For the Clan of Flames, our fights are typically small in scale. There is … absolutely no exception given to allow the sacrifice of lives. /

Saizou: What?

Rinka: I was taught to consider every condition during battle, that this was of the utmost importance. /

And that if one is to slip through the cracks of a life and death situation, retreating at just the right time can be a brave decision … /

Saizou: Fool … as if there could be anything like bravery in a retreat. /

… hmph, you call yourself the Clan of Flames and make yourself sound impressive, but the real thing doesn’t live up to the name. I can’t believe what I’ve heard, you nasty little coward. / …

Rinka: ………… /

Translation end!

Translation notes: I added Saizou’s “because of you” into the English because it’s implied by のに (noni) which in this case is used to signal blame and regret toward the person the party is speaking to. Similarly, I added the part about “rising up again” in the line before that because おく implies that something was done to prepare for something else or prevent something from happening. If you have a better way of getting that across, I’d love to hear it, along with any other criticisms or comments you might have below!

If you want to see what Nintendo’s translation was, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed this conversation here.

Changelog: 8/18/2016 Thanks to DJ Deadly Skillz, some of the translation has been corrected for better language, grammar and fluency. Thanks again! There are no honorifics to change in this conversation. Replicated below is version 1.0 or the original unedited lines for reference:

Saizou: I’m not going to let you say you forgot about what happened in the last battle! ->

Saizou: We could have fought more!

Rinka: You’re letting your blood thirst get the better of you … Saizou.

Rinka: For the Clan of Flames, our fights are typically small in scale. There is … absolutely no room to decide that sacrifices are legitimate.

Rinka: I was taught that considering at every part of the battle conditions is of the utmost importance.

Saizou: Fool … as if there could be anything like so much as bravery in a retreat.

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 3/25/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 3/25/2016.  Before I get started, I want to give a gratitude-filled thank you to all the people so far who have pitched in! Remember you can follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I completed my goal to post at least five new support conversations, and finished uploading the first complete set of support conversations, which is Rinka x Tsubaki. The conversations I did yesterday are as follows:

Lazwald x Luna B

Lazwald x Luna A

Rinka x Tsubaki B

Rinka x Tsubaki A

Rinka x Tsubaki S

I also made a post asking for feedback on issues like portraying the selectable personality type/politeness level here.

Today’s Goals

  • Respond to comments and constructive criticism
  • Continue to upload at least five more pages of support conversations, I’d like to continue for a little while like this to and then ramp up, just to make sure I can be consistently successfully instead of setting unrealistic goals
  • Create a master list where people can access all the parts of the translation
  • Start incorporating people’s feedback and revise the currently done translations
  • Start translating other parts of the game

Possible Complications: I have the “we are Siamese if you please” song from Lady & the Tramp stuck in my head. Whenever I get a song stuck in my head, I have the bad habit of unconsciously typing the lyrics out, so if you see something “do you see that thing swimming round and round, maybe we could reach in and make it drown” pop into a translation somewhere, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

How you can help out: Provide constructive criticism about the translations I post. Provide continuing feedback about site issues and what you’d like to see me focus on next in the translation.

Jobs I Need Done

  • I need people to spread the word, so we can get as much help as possible!
  • As always I need feedback wherever solicited or on relevant translation pages!

We are Siamese if you please, ba dum bum bum …

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Rinka x Tsubaki S

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and handle babies only between the hours of bourbon and whiskey.

Edited to version 2.0 with reader feedback. (You can find the original version replicated below.) Here’s the support conversation between Rinka and Tsubaki for the S level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.) Due to feedback, I am including notes on how I approached translation to better explain the choices I made or any cultural/language concerns. This will be posted after the translation to avoid spoiling or forcing my interpretation before people read the material.

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Tsubaki: Say Rinka, you good to talk for a minute? /

Rinka: Well, if it isn’t Tsubaki? What’s up?

Tsubaki: Remember the other day, when I said something like, “I’ve really been thinking about all the ways I act”? /

Rinka: Yeah. We settled on a truce after talking it out.

Tsubaki: Yep, and what’s more, I finally understand. /

I realized why someone like me, who’s always on top of things, would spout stuff that’d tick you off / どうしていつも完璧な俺がリンカを怒らせるようなことを言ったのか。

Rinka: Is that so? And why pray tell, would that be?

Tsubaki: I think, well, it looks like I might have fallen in love with you.

Rinka: Oh, of course, you fell in love with me … … wait, /

W-wh-wh-whaaaaaat?

Tsubaki: Err, I don’t get it. You look quite surprised to hear that …

Rinka: Don’t be an idiot! Saying you love me, it’s saying, well, what it is saying? It’s saying … /

Tsubaki: Yeah, it’s love all right. The break out in hives, total crush kind of love. /

Rinka: … And how exactly did we reach this grand conclusion? /

Tsubaki: Oh right. Well since the last time we talked, I thought it about it, then I thought about it some more.

And I said to myself I sure do think about you all the time.

And I guess that’s why I just run my mouth off and say things I really shouldn’t. /

So whaddaya think? /

Rinka: What do … I think? /

Tsubaki: Do you haaaate me?

Rinka: … No, I definitely don’t … hate you.

Now that I think about it, I … was the one to start criticizing how you fight, wasn’t I?

I think … I suppose I might have … started to think about you … in that way. From that day.

Tsubaki: So …

Rinka: Yeah, it looks like I might actually think the same of …

Tsubaki: Great, what a relief! So that means you’re going to be my bride! /

Rinka: Wha- ! How did we get from “I like you” to marriage plans so quickly? /

Tsubaki: I mean if we like each other, then that would be the perfect outcome, would it not?

Rinka: Well yeah, I guess you could say that …

Tsubaki: You don’t wanna? /

Rinka: I-I’m not saying I don’t want to.

Tsubaki: That’s that, then. Great! Let’s be good lovers, mmmkay? /

Rinka: O…kay… Wait a minute, is it really okay to just up and do this in such a nonchalant fashion? /

Tsubaki: It’s not about fashion. It’s about what’s on the inside! /

I’ll definitely treasure you. Promise. /

Rinka: … That goes for me, too.

Translation end!

If you want to see what Nintendo’s translation was, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed this conversation here.

Translation notes: I put the expression “pray tell” for Rinka in that one line because that ほう (hou) type of exclamation gives off a feel as if the speaker is playing with or humoring the person who said it to them. There seems to be a unwritten rule in English where you’re not supposed to repeat the same word in the same sentence, so I used that to express how flustered Rinka feels with the four repeats of “saying” to match her trying to put it into words in the Japanese version. Do you think there’s better way? In similar style, when Tsubaki says, “You don’t wanna?” I feel like the way he says it is like when you jut out your lip and look like a dejected child with big doe eyes and an exaggerated tone. How can I get that across do you think? Last but not least, I get the feeling Rinka is too stunned to properly reply in the last line, but I’m not quite sure how to get that across. Thoughts?

Changelog 8/18/2016: Thanks to Nadya for her detailed and specific criticisms and typo corrections! There are no honorifics to change in this conversation. I corrected some of them, but here is version 1.0, or the original unedited lines for reference:

Tsubaki: Remember the other day, when I said something like, “I’ve been thinking all sorts of things about the way I act”?

Rinka: Yeah. We settled on a truce after talking out the matter.

And I said to myself I sure do think about you a whole ton.

Rinka: Yeah, it looks like I might actually think of you like …
