Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/13/2016

Here are my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/13/2016. I see some new people have been commenting recently. Thanks much to new and old commenters! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On:

Well, I didn’t really have a goal because of the internet issues, but I still got a ton translated:

Hinata x Orochi C

Hinata x Orochi B

Hinata  x Orochi  A

Hinata x Orochi S

Ophelia x Shalla C

Ophelia x Shalla B

Ophelia x Shalla A

Kamui (M) x Sakura C

Ignis x Nyx C

Ignis x Matoi C

Asama x Mozume C

Nyx Skinship Lines

Shigure Skinship Lines

As well, big news! I got a request to do a second game, which is Angelique for the SNES/SFC. So obviously Fire Emblem Fates will continue to be the main attraction until it’s done. Once it is done, Angelique will be the main project, but until then, when I have some free time, I’ll be working on it in spurts, so as not to conflict with Fire Emblem Fates. Look for the first Angelique translations sometime soon.

Today’s Goals

  • Clear up older translations and incorporate feedback to edit them as well catch up on the site. I did a lot of translations while I couldn’t access the internet because the material is on my hard drive, but since I couldn’t access the site, I couldn’t correct older translations. I got a lot of feedback in those two days as well, so I thought I’d take a day to catch up on the backlog.

Possible Complications: Still got paying work to do.

How you can help out: Well, there was a bevy of new translations posted today. Any feedback and criticism is welcome!

Jobs I Need Done

  • I will always and forever need people to comment on my translations as much they can.
  • Vote! It’s spoiler free. If you’re waiting for the translation patch, these polls aren’t going to ruin anything for you.
  • Speaking of feedback, we had discusses before how to do translations of the different personality types for Kamui, the player character. I decided in the end to put notes at the end of the translation if it didn’t affect a lot of lines and to put all three personalities/politeness types together if there were many, many lines that got affected. Take a look at Kamui (M) x Sakura to see how I did it and let me know if that seems like an okay approach.

As always, there’s a page to discuss matter with others or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. It’s been updated to a new page for April. You can use that page for April to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and respect! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not. This page has also been updated for April.

Orochi: Oooh, your shoulder massages are the greatest of the great … feels so nice. /

Hinata: ………… /

Orochi: Hm … ? What’s the matter, Hinata? /

Have you come once more to feel used when I get you to massage my shoulders? /

Hinata: Ah! No … just thinking a bit. /

Orochi: Thinking a bit? /

Hinata: Yeah. Until lately, you and I hadn’t talked lots, right?

I only really thought of you as a sexy older woman, but / 俺、オロチのこと、色気がある姉ちゃんだなーぐらいにしか思わなかったけど、

I’ve been thinking, in the end, my gut was all wrong … /

Orochi: What? Are you trying to say that you don’t feel like I’m sexy anymore? /

Hinata: Well, let’s put that aside for now.

Before when I didn’t really get you, it was hard to speak up, but now it’s different. That’s what I’m saying. /

When I did talk to you, you were really different from what I thought, I felt like … you were pretty cute. /

Orochi: Cute? Cute? Hinata, what are you saying! /

Hinata: Just what I mean? /

I … love you, Orochi. I even think you’re still sexy … /

Orochi: H-Hinata … ! /

Hinata: How about you? Whaddaya think of me?

Orochi: Th-that’s … /

Hinata: If you don’t tell me, I’ll give a REAL HARD massage. /

Orochi: Ahhh! Ouch, ouch, ouch! Stop that at once! /

Okay … I … find you quite fetching, Hinata. /

Hinata: R-really? /

Orochi: If I didn’t, I wouldn’t go through the trouble of calling on you.

The way you fight, your more gentle sides, they’re all bright sides in my eyes. /

Hinata: Hmmm … /

Orochi: What an insolent reaction. And just as I had properly answered you …

Hinata: It’s nothing, just thought your face getting bright red when you said it was super cute. /

Orochi: You are not to let such embarrassing things escape your lips! /

Hinata: Why not? It’s so feminine and I’m saying I love those parts of you too!

… So Orochi. Here’s to a future at my lover! / …

Orochi: Heh … I guess that’s it then. Count me in too.

Translation end!

Translation notes: Out of all of their conversations, this is one of the most straightforward, and if you’ll let me put my personal opinion in, I love the change in the way they relate to each other and how it shows Hinata really has changed to see more about other people and Orochi has come to find him “fetching” as she would say. You really ought to see how Nintendo completely revamped this conversation into something else, probably because they didn’t like Hinata hurting Orochi with his massage in that one part.

If you want to see how Nintendo wrote some of the most embarrassingly bad dialogue possible, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed that here.

Changelog: None yet.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Hinata x Orochi A

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and eat your hamburgers, Maya.

Here’s the support conversation between Hinata and Orochi for the A level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Hinata: Yo, Orochi. /

Orochi: Oh, Hinata? /

Hinata: It’s about the other day, all that stuff was just you playing around with me, wasn’t it?

Orochi: Yes, your shoulder massages and tea, that day’s service was something quite supreme … /

Hinata: I knew it …

Orochi: Well, it’s not so bad, is it?

Since then, have you not come to consider the needs of your comrades a bit better? /

Hinata: W-well yeah. /

It was nice that they felt good when I did something for them and I’ve gotten able to see whether they need something or not.

Orochi: And that’s proof that your view of the world has broadened. /

In that way, by learning to supplant what you lack, you have properly succeeded, have you not?

Hinata: What do you mean by that?

Orochi: You take one thing … for instance sword training … /

And while your ability to concentrate on that one thing is truly wonderful, you have a nasty habit of being pulled in by your obsession and not seeing the wider picture.

If you continue like that, one day you’re bound to be swept up by your feet head over heels into a place where you lose perspective. /

In short, I’m saying broaden your horizons, think about the conditions and people around you and then act. /

If you do that, the strength you seek should come to you naturally. /

Hinata: Hmm, I feel like I understand, but don’t quite get it …

Orochi: Well, one day you’ll come to know.

The other day as my faithful servant was absolutely not a meaningless act. /

Hinata: Really? /

Orochi: What is this, are you doubting me?

Hinata: Well I guess because of you, I did come to see where I’m lacking … /

Guess I’d better say thank you for it!

Orochi: Hehehe … it was nothing. /

Now then, as a sign of your gratitude, why not give me a shoulder massage? /

Hinata: That’s nothing to do with the fortune telling though .. /

Orochi: Yikes, have I been found out? Hehehe … /

Translation end!

Translation notes: The long translation notes for the B conversation really also have an effect here, so if you haven’t, please go read that if you want a detailed description of the things to take into consideration for this translation. The hardest thing to translate was 足元を救う (ashimoto wo sukuu) which is a tricky idiom even in Japanese. It’s a figurative way of saying that you fall down, but the “ashimoto” in question is not your literal feet, but your perspective, your ability to be centered or have a good view of things around you, so I translated it that way. Please do keep in mind that Hinata’s expressions like “I’ve gotten able to see” are meant to keep his rather commoner way of talking in, but of course more natural ways of doing that are always welcome. Any ideas or constructive criticism on how to improve the English? Let me know in the comments below.

If you want to see how Nintendo have again simplified the concepts and changed the conversation, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed that here.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Hinata x Orochi B

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and don’t tell me I’m not made of ketchup.

Here’s the support conversation between Hinata and Orochi for the B level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Orochi: Well, Hinata, here it is. The way that you can escape from the fate of the other day’s divination … /

Hinata: Yeah. You’ll forgive me if I’m not interested in not being able to get stronger! I’ll do anything! /

Orochi: Hmph. Excellent dedication, that.
For a start, it’s perhaps not a good thing that you should think only of your sword training. /
Which means that the voices of the heavens say that you should find a space to divert your eyes more to other things. /
Hinata: A space, huh … /
Orochi: Which is why I’m going to have you lend me a hand. /
Hinata: Eh? Why is lending you a hand going to connect to finding the space for other things? /
Orochi: To divert your eyes to other things … in short, it means don’t just think of yourself. /
To pick up on other considerations, what others, like your comrades in arms or your friends, may be wishing for …
It links to finding your space as a human being in the world.
Hinata: Hmmm … /
Orochi: That’s why when there’s a confidant in front of you …
If you’re able to find out what, of all things it could be, that they desire, then you’ve done that.
Hinata: Of course! Let’s get straight to it.
Hmm … what Orochi wants … wants done for her …
Orochi: There seems to be an empty mug right by me.
Hinata: Ooooh, so you want some tea to drink? /
Orochi: That’s the way of it! Now, get me some tea. /
Hinata: What!? What’s this all about? Am I not just some lowly servant! /
Orochi: I’m sorry … but this also among the revelations of the gods. /
I guess if you don’t want to follow their words, then it has absolutely no bearing on me.
Hinata: Sheesh … understood. As you wish, I’ll get yer tea. /
Orochi: Hmph, it’s good to be humble. And in this way, I shall increasingly come for your service. /
Ah, speak of the devil, I’ve felt my shoulders getting tense recently … /
Hinata: Yes yes … I’ll get to rubbing them later … /
Orochi: Sorry, Hinata. You are in my debt.

Translation end!

Translation notes: I think you know what Orochi is trying to do and nearly all of her conversations involve some sort of flippant trickery. In this way, she’s quite similar to Asama, but less overtly mean and more playful. Despite this, she’s not actually as pretentious as he is, but still does speak in a heightened tone with some more formal words and heavy imagery. Hinata on the other hand, is trying to be a little more polite than he usually is at the end to go with his, err, re-education, but I’m not sure if I managed to portray the small changes in the way he speaks. I do occasionally misspell some of his words to give him more of that guttersnipe/country style which suits his Japanese speech.  It’s a balancing act.

It’s important to remember that Byakuya characters do live in a fictional Japan written by Japanese people and as such, sometimes you have to translate really more literal than you’d usually do so because there’s a Japanese concept that’s important to the conversation that you can’t just localize away. In this case, 察し (sasshi) is often not understood well in my discussions with other cultures. Every culture has their own conception of how to relate to others and they differ sometimes in subtle ways, sasshi is for Japan, the way of using cultural cues to guess what people want before they want it and react accordingly. You may think it’s just being considerate like any person would do, but this goes a lot farther into reaching into the collective common sense of the group, specifically in-groups and out-groups and how they relate in a hierarchy.

It is crucial to their character development that it’s kept in, because an interesting part of Orochi’s character is that she often tricks people into making themselves better versions of themselves. She does have a point, because Hinata is characterized as being selfish in the Japanese conception of being selfish, which is not thinking enough of others rather than a more simple idea of self-absorption. Of course Orochi is a playful trickster (which is presumably why she is named after a mythical snake) who enjoys manipulating people and Hinata is a sunny, nice, naive guy (which is probably why his name literally means “sunny place.”) When he says “lowly servant,” he’s referring to hard workers who labored under merchants and such, faithfully serving them, which really Hinata should be doing more of rather than tending to his own needs, but Orochi finds a way to make it work for her own advantage.

This is personally one of my favorite of the support conversation chains in the game and it’s a shame that Treehouse removed some of its cultural resonance because it’s a bit tricky to translate.

Got some ideas for making it better? Let me know in the comments below!

If you want to see how Nintendo changed it from consideration and societal cues to confidence, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed that here.

Orochi: Hey Hinata. Hold up a minute. /

Hinata: ‘Ey? Well if it isn’t Orochi. What’s up?

Orochi: What’s in your hands … those are herbs, right?

Hinata: Yep. I picked them when I came across them in the mountains a while ago. /

Orochi: Those herbs … would you not hand them over to me? I’ve just run out of materials for divination./

Hinata: Huh? You can use ’em for fortune telling? /

I just thought we could maybe use them for medicine, so I picked them up.

Orochi: Of course you can use them as medicine. But it’s not terribly good for that.

Rather, it’s often used a kind of incense when divining futures. /

Hinata: Ooooh … Sounds interesting. /

Oh, if you’re using it for that then, see if I’m going to get stronger in the future! /

Orochi: Oh, gaining strength, is it … why not? I shall tell your future. /

Let’s see … *cough*. Ommmmmm … /

Hinata: Aughh … ! It feels kind of spooky all of a sudden, you okay? /

Orochi: … Wa!!! /

Hinata: W-what? Did you get results? God’s message?

Orochi: … Oh, Hinata. I have an unfortunate message for you.

Your fortune about whether you’d become stronger … if you keep going on your current path, it’s unlikely for your wish to be granted. /

Hinata: W-what, why? Can’t you do something? /

Orochi: Hmm … I’m not saying I can’t do anything, if you let me handle it …

Hinata: Well please then, do!

Orochi: Okay, sure. I shall lend you my powers. But it’s going to take a fair bit of time to prepare … /

Wait and I shall call on you again. /

Hinata: S-Sure. Got it. Please give it all you’ve got. /

Orochi: Worry not, you’re in good hands. /

Translation end!

Translation notes: I added “worry not” to the end of the conversation, because the expression Orochi uses is often used to mean that, and translated Hinata’s 頼んだ (tanonda) that way because it’s often used to mean a lot of other things than request something, such as communicated begging of different sorts or pleading or confirming that somebody really does have your back. Do you have any other English fluency quibbles or other constructive criticisms? Let me know in the comments below.

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/8/2016

We’re heading for the weekend! Here are my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/8/2016. Thanks for all your help, guys! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I did meet met my goal of getting at least five support conversations a day done, but sadly no Skinship. So another day of rather mediocre results. The conversations are as below:

Foleo x Shigure C

Deere x Ophelia C

Kagero x Setsuna C

Orochi x Takumi C

Eponine x Shinonome C

Today’s Goals

  • Keep on chugging, 5+ supports and as much Skinship as I can
  • Those name polls for Marx and Elfy, I need to get to them.

Possible Complications: Gotta keep that real-life workflow flowing.

How you can help out: Feedback, criticism and votes, as always! You can see updates for all the changes I’m making in the Changelog.

Jobs I Need Done

  • If you see a translation page with no comments on it, why not take a brief look? If you see something to fix, tell me about it. If not, say, “This looks good. Didn’t find any problems,” or something to that extent. I do wait a while before I correct and edit translations just to make sure I don’t ignore anyone who comes along to comment, but I do get around to them!
  • Vote! Come on guys, it’s not that hard to click on a straw poll and choose an option! There are no spoilers.
  • I’m going to continue to request help for the method of doing in-page links, because nothing I’ve tried so far is working!

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Orochi x Takumi C

Takumi: Orochi, you’re an annoying little … please for the love the gods, stop playing around with people …

Translation end!

Translation notes: I’m having a lot of trouble getting Orochi’s accent right. She speaks with the polite authority of an older warrior, but she also has that older woman air of civility to her, think Angela Lansbury if she were in her late 20s and spoke like does in Murder She Wrote. Anyone willing to help with this and other parts? Let me know in the comments below!

If you want to see how Nintendo once again just changed the conversation however they saw fit, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed the official translation of this conversation here.
