Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/2/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/2/2016.  Eternal gratitude to all the people who have reached out in support! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

Great success! I was able to translate and post a record seven support conversations yesterday, plus a list of Special Bonds dialogue that characters speak under certain conditions when you reach friendly conditions with them.

Aqua x Nishiki C

Aqua x Nishiki B

Aqua x Nishiki A

Aqua x Nishiki S

Lazwald x Soleil A

Asama x Nishiki A

Anna Special Bonds Dialogue List.

Today’s Goals

  • 5+ support conversations
  • Start doing some more Skinship dialogue for the translation patch team
  • Complete and upload Fawful Friday articles

Possible Complications: Gotta finish some real paying jobs as usual. Rent’s due!

How you can help out: As always, I need feedback, even if it’s just to tell me that there’s nothing wrong with the translation. Of course you’re welcome to comment on any translation you wish, but if you see a translation with no comments, You can see updates for all the changes I’m making in the Changelog.

Jobs I Need Done

  • If you know of a place that would appreciate a link to Karasu Corps or a friend who would be interested in helping out, help spread the word!
  • As always, feedback on translations and polls is always appreciated.
  • On the Project Help page a discussion has been started about translating honorifics for Byakuya Kingdom’s characters, since they ostensibly take place in a fictional Japan. Go there (link right below this) and lend your thoughts to the conversation. I’ll of course change to whatever the strongest consensus is.

As always, there’s a page to discuss matter with others or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. It’s been updated to a new page for April. You can use that page for April to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and respect! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not. This page has also been updated for April.

Translation notes: I should mention the pillows Nishiki mentions here 抱きまくら (dakimakura) or those famous anime and manga type body pillows that you can embrace and hug. I wasn’t sure how to translate it, so I used something like “huggable pillow.” I wonder if that works? Is there an English word for dakimura? Nishiki: I wonder what that was all about … ? She was looking pretty agitated there … / ニシキ: ずいぶん焦っていたようだったけど…なんだったんだろう…?

Translation end!

Translation notes:  The big one here is not so much the language, but the cultural context. This whole set of support conversations hinges on the idea that foxes in Japanese folklore are magical and especially their tails. There’s a lot of myth and folklore about fox tails. In general, foxes entrance humans, but if you catch their tail, their true identities will be revealed. Since Nishiki really is a fox creature, catching his tail won’t do anything, but the general outline of the folklore is still maintained. Think of it as how sometimes the image of a little girl in a red riding hood in the forest is maintained, but the specifics are thrown out, that’s how these play out in the Japanese, so one has to keep that in mind when translating. After I put you through all that the other day, you’ve come to be tricked by me again? / 先日あれだけの目に遭っていながら、また私に騙されに来たんですか?

Nishiki: About that … I think, after all, you’re pretty amazing. / ニシキ: そのことだけど…ボクはやっぱり、アサマのことをすごいと思うんだ。

Asama: Whatever do you mean? / アサマ: どういうことですか?

Nishiki: Because the fact that you can read the whether meanings that you really do ascetic training and attain that skill, right? / ニシキ: だって天気が読めたのは、アサマが本当に修行してたから身に付いたものだろう?

If that’s the case, then the fact that you overcame the difficult of your training means that you’re rightfully gaining power. / それならその修行を乗り越えたアサマは、ちゃんと力を得ているということだからね。

Asama: ………… / アサマ: …………

Nishiki: On top of that, it’s true that you actually did tough ascetic stuff like that waterfall raining, right? / ニシキ: それに、滝行みたいな辛い修行をやってきたことは事実なわけだろう?

Asama: Well, yes … / アサマ: ええ、まぁ…

Nishiki: … I knew it. That means you really are amazing! / ニシキ: …うん。それじゃあやっぱり、アサマはすごいよ!

… I find it interferes with my constitution. / …どうも調子が狂います。

Nishiki: Hmm … well then, why not make fun of me more and get rid of your resentment? / ニシキ: んー…それじゃあ、もっとボクをからかって鬱憤を晴らすかい?

Asama: … That might be a good move. / アサマ: …それもいいですね。

I can’t let it end here. Some day soon, I shall beguile you with more ridicule. / このまま終わるなんて面白くない。また近いうちにからかって差し上げましょう。

Nishiki: Ahahah, “beguile you with ridicule,” I’ve never heard anyone talk like that before. / ニシキ: あはは! からかって差し上げるだなんて言い方、聞いたことがないよ。

Asama: You’re only going to be laughing for a little while. / アサマ: そうやって笑っていられるのも今のうちです。

Better prepare yourself, because I’m about to show you the real article. / 今に目にもの見せてあげますから、覚悟していてくださいね?

Nishiki: Yaaay, I can’t wait! / ニシキ: わーい、楽しみだなー。

Translation notes: I liked how at the end of the conversation Nishiki’s propensity to be pure and friendly turns the situation on its head here and I hope I accurately translated how his innocent remark about not hearing anyone talk like Asama reveals the irony of how mean and fake Asama is. Asama: As if I could hear the voices of the enlightened ones. That was just my little lie. / アサマ: 御仏の声なんて聞こえる訳ないですよ。あれは私の嘘なんですから。

Nishiki: What? Are you kidding me?/ ニシキ: ええ!? そうだったの!?

Asama: Nope. The other day, all I had to do predict rain was read the movements of the clouds. / アサマ: はい。この間、雨を察知したのは、雲の動きを読んでいたからですよ。

It is said that the weather of the mountains changes easily and cannot be easily read, but / 山の天気は変わりやすいので、簡単には読めないと言われていますが、

But for someone like me, who completed ascetic training in the mountains from a young age, it is nothing more than a cheap trick. / 幼い頃から山で修行をしていた私にとっては、あんなことは造作もないのですよ。

Nishiki: Oooh … so then, when you were talking about the voices of the enlightened gentleman … / ニシキ: ううっ…じゃあ仏様の声というのは…

Asama: I’ve certainly never heard of it. / アサマ: 私は聞いたことがありませんねえ。

Nishiki: You tricked me! You’re horrible! Asammmmmaaa! / ニシキ: ボクを騙したんだね!?ひどいよー!! アサマーーーッ!!!

Asama: Ahahaha, sorry about that. / アサマ: あははは、すみません。

Your reaction was far too innocent and pure … it just happened. / ニシキさんの反応があまりにも純粋だったもので…つい。

Translation end!

Translation notes: The same caveats about translations of religious concepts in the Fire Emblem that I mentioned in the C level stay for this conversation. Asama uses 造作も無い (ぞうさもない) and I find myself at a loss for words for how to explain this expression, other than it isn’t as it is literally written and so that’s I translated it as “nothing but a cheap trick,” though sometimes you may see it be translated “it was nothing” or “no trouble,” the etymology of this expression fit the “cheap trick” idea so well that I thought it made an excellent translation for this particular conversation, given the context. Do you agree? Want to point out typos or give me some comments to help me reach better English fluency and naturalness? Let me know in the comments below.
