Today’s Goals and Jobs – 3/26/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 3/26/2016.  Thanks again for all your detailed comments and feedback! Remember you can follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I completed my goal of creating a master list where you can find all currently translated material for Fire Emblem Fates. Hopefully, this will make it easier to navigate the site as more and more content gets uploaded.

I completed my goal to start translating other parts of the game. I started with the Arena Messages List.

I completed my goal to respond to people’s feedback and edit translations for greater fluency. These changes can be found on the Changelog.

I completed my goal to post at least five new support conversations, and finished uploading two more complete sets of support conversations, which are Lazwald x Luna and Rinka x Saizou. The conversations I did yesterday are as follows:

Lazwald x Luna S

Rinka x Saizou C

Rinka x Saizou B

Rinka x Saizou A

Rinka x Saizou S

Today’s Goals

  • Continue to upload at least five more pages of support conversations, to continue to be consistent
  • Post the first Fawful Friday posts. Fawful Friday is where I post translations that are not related to Fire Emblem Fates, but to the wider realm of Japanese-related things. I’ll be uploading some of my past stuff and translating an interview 4Gamer did with CERO, the ratings board for Japanese games. If you don’t know who Fawful is, this video should explain things to you.
  • To get a little more done with the work in the Current Requests page, which is now updated with the requests I’ve gotten.

Possible complications: I’ve got a lot of work to do today. Hopefully I can get it all done and it’s not too much.

For that reason, I’m going to hold off from replying to comments and editing translations for today, just so I can focus on these areas. Please understand that I am not ignoring you guys’ fantastic contributions, there are just times when I need to focus on other things. Please continue to give feedback, because I do see it and note it and appreciate it and I will get around to implementing it.

As well, I’ve decided that in order to not burn out, I’ll take every Saturday off for rest, because it’s my favorite day of the week. I hope this doesn’t offend you, but I think I’ll need it as time goes on and the grind gets more serious. I will devote a lot of Sunday to implementing your ideas and changes to the scripts.

How you can help out: Provide constructive criticism about the translations I post. Provide continuing feedback about site issues and what you’d like to see me focus on next in the translation. Tell me if the Fawful Friday things I post are informative, or if you’d like to see me focus on a different area.

Jobs I Need Done

  • I need people to spread the word, so we can get as much help as possible!
  • As always I need feedback wherever solicited or on relevant translation pages!
  • If some kind soul would provide the number of My Castle system menu dumps for different facilities/gameplay menus I need to translate, I would be eternally grateful.

Thank you in advance for any help you give and may the ravens always smile upon you!

As always, there’s a page to discuss or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. You can use that page for the remaining days of March to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and kisses! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not.

Luna: I got that part of it!

You really thought … you want to be together forever? Are you sure?/

Lazwald: Yep. I’m sure! /

Lazwald: I don’t know? What could you possibly be talking about?

Luna: Erg, I just can’t stand it anymore! Why are you so thick? /

Lazwald: Ahaha, it’s a joke, Luna. /

Luna: A j-joke? /

Lazwald:  I do love you. Consider this bracelet my vow of love to you.

Lazwald: So can you see it in your heart to maybe … marry me?

Luna:  Finally! Why don’t you just say it honestly from the beginning! /

Lazwald: Well … will you give me your answer? /

Luna:  I-I … what could I say … it’s … /

We’ve known each for so long, y-you know what my answer is without me even saying it!

Lazwald: Nope. I don’t. Not if you don’t say it out loud. /

Luna:  Ugh … you’re such a tease … /

Even though you know very well … what my feelings are …

Lazwald:  Ahaha, come on, let me hear it. I can’t wait! /

Luna: ………… /

I-I … love you … too …

I always have … I always will, no matter where we end up … I love you.

Lazwald: Mm-hmm … /

Luna:  So … I guess I have nothing better to do than let you marry me!

Lazwald: Thank you … ! With this promise, we’ll … never be torn apart from each other.

Luna:  W-well said … but I’m warning you, if you don’t make me happy, you’ll never hear the end of it …

Lazwald: I know, I know. I’ll definitely make you happy, your highness! /

Translation end!

Translation notes: I’ve heard on American television shows when people are talking about a couple that’s about to be married, one person will say, “Make her happy, man” or something to that effect. So I translated it 100% literally on the last lines there, because there really isn’t much of a difference between the two from my experience. Do I have that wrong? Am I misunderstanding it? Also the part where Luna says, “Despite the fact,” she uses a Japanese expression which is supposed to put blame and criticism on the person she’s speaking about, but I feel like “despite the fact” is too formal and debate-like for her/the context of the scene. Is there some other expression I can use? As always let me know in the comments below and thank you for your continued support!

Changelog: 8/18/2016 Thanks to Immahnoob, Sirixu and DJ Deadly Skillz, several lines have been updated to better reflect English fluency and several typos and grammar mistakes have been corrected. Version 1.0 or the original unedited translated lines are represented below:

Lazwald: After all that thought, I came to the conclusion that I love you. I want to be with you forever.

Luna: What’s a j-joke?

Luna: Despite the fact that you know very well … what my feelings are …

Lazwald: It’s this bracelet … I wonder if you’ll accept it?

Luna: You really thought … you wanted to be together with me forever, are you sure?

What I mean to say is … come on … don’t you have something else to tell me?

Lazwald: Well … will you tell me your answer?

Lazwald: Nope. Don’t know. Not if you don’t tell me out loud.

If you want to see how Nintendo changed this and randomly inserted Odin into the conversation out of the blue again, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed this conversation here.

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 3/25/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 3/25/2016.  Before I get started, I want to give a gratitude-filled thank you to all the people so far who have pitched in! Remember you can follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I completed my goal to post at least five new support conversations, and finished uploading the first complete set of support conversations, which is Rinka x Tsubaki. The conversations I did yesterday are as follows:

Lazwald x Luna B

Lazwald x Luna A

Rinka x Tsubaki B

Rinka x Tsubaki A

Rinka x Tsubaki S

I also made a post asking for feedback on issues like portraying the selectable personality type/politeness level here.

Today’s Goals

  • Respond to comments and constructive criticism
  • Continue to upload at least five more pages of support conversations, I’d like to continue for a little while like this to and then ramp up, just to make sure I can be consistently successfully instead of setting unrealistic goals
  • Create a master list where people can access all the parts of the translation
  • Start incorporating people’s feedback and revise the currently done translations
  • Start translating other parts of the game

Possible Complications: I have the “we are Siamese if you please” song from Lady & the Tramp stuck in my head. Whenever I get a song stuck in my head, I have the bad habit of unconsciously typing the lyrics out, so if you see something “do you see that thing swimming round and round, maybe we could reach in and make it drown” pop into a translation somewhere, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

How you can help out: Provide constructive criticism about the translations I post. Provide continuing feedback about site issues and what you’d like to see me focus on next in the translation.

Jobs I Need Done

  • I need people to spread the word, so we can get as much help as possible!
  • As always I need feedback wherever solicited or on relevant translation pages!

We are Siamese if you please, ba dum bum bum …

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Lazwald x Luna A

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and where’s Waldo?

Luna: Y-yeah well about that … I’m sorry. /

Lazwald: You’ve got this downtrodden look about you? What’s this all about?

It’s not like you to just meekly apologize, Luna … are you coming down with something? /

Luna: What! How rude! I’ve no fever! /

It’s just … maybe I’ve been thinking about old times … /

………… / …………

Lazwald:  I guess remembering the world we came from has put you in a somber mood? /

Luna: I-I’m not in a somber mood! But now that you mention our world …

It’s been such a long time since our rightful place, if you can call it that, was taken from us.

… There’s no point in bringing it up now. I’m fine … it doesn’t bother me at all. / …

Luna: Lazwald …

Lazwald: Don’t look at me like that. Look, what I want to say is …

I understand how you feel when you get homesick, Luna! /

Luna: I thought I already told you I’m not lonely! /

Lazwald: Ahaha. My bad, my bad! /

Luna: C-certainly there are times when I feel a little … tiny bit homesick, but …

Lazwald: But what?

Luna: I guess you’re here with me … maybe that’s why I don’t feel alone … /

Lazwald: That’s the spirit. I’ll stick with you wherever you go, Luna! /

So come on, put on your usual smile! Smile! /

Luna:  W-whenever I’m with you, I’m more likely to be enraged than smiling! /

Lazwald:  Ahaha! It has always been that way, hasn’t it?

Hey, if it’s worth anything to you, I’ll always be by your side. /

Luna: D-don’t get the wrong idea! It’s just my rotten luck that fate has saddled me with you!

Lazwald: Rotten luck is still luck, you know. If you need something, you can confide in me anytime. /

Luna: H-hmph! The way you get all pumped up about it really gets my goat … /

But … yeah … / でも…その…

… thanks. You cheered me up … just a little bit. / …

Lazwald: Cool, no problem. /

Translation end!

Translation notes: If you ask me, this is why it’s important to keep in Lazwald’s reference to the world they came from and the line about changes in the original C conversation.

If you want to see the way Nintendo inserted Odin into the conversation out of the blue, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed this conversation here.

Changelog: 8/18/2016 Various typo corrections were made, as well as line changes due to the gracious and thorough comments from anonf4321. Version 1.0, or the original unedited lines are included below for your reference:

Lazwald:  So maybe remembering the world we came from has got you in a downer mood?

Luna: I-I’m not in any “downer mood!” But when you say the world we came from …

… Bringing it up now, after all this time makes no difference. It’s fine … doesn’t bother me at all …

Lazwald: Yeah right. Look, what I want to say is …

That I know how you feel when you get homesick, Luna!

Luna: I thought I already told you I wasn’t feeling down!

Lazwald: That’s the spirit. I’m stuck on you wherever you go, Luna!

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Lazwald x Luna B

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and mind the drunk nun.

Edited to version 2.0 with reader feedback. (You can find the original version replicated below.) Here’s the support conversation between Lazwald and Luna for the B level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.) Due to feedback, I am including notes on how I approached translation to better explain the choices I made or any cultural/language concerns. This will be posted after the translation to avoid spoiling or forcing my interpretation before people read the material.

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Lazwald: Hey, Luna. Looking cute as ever today! /

Luna: Lazwald … you never learn, do you?

If you keep saying whatever comes to mind like that, one day people are just going to stop listening to you.

Lazwald: What are you talking about? All I ever do is speak from the heart. /

Luna: Is that so? From the heart, huh? /

Lazwald: I really do think you’re cute, Luna, is that so bad? /

Luna: Unfortunately for you, no matter what you say … /

It’s not going to get me freaked out or flustered anymore! /

In fact, I’m going to do it to you!

Lazwald: Y-you’re going to freak me out?

Lazwald: Luna? W-why are you staring at me like that?

Lazwald: S-stop it, Luna … that’s incredibly … embarrassing. /

If you keep looking at me like that … I, I feel like my face is going to burst into flames … /

Lazwald: P-please … no more … stop it already … /

Luna: Hell no!

Lazwald: Jeez, d-did you have to put it on full blast like that?

Luna: Consider this your punishment! /

A punishment for going around and seducing girls without any consideration … for playing around with women’s hearts like it’s some kind of joke! /

Lazwald: I-I never meant to do anything like that …

Luna:  A woman’s heart is a pure and delicate thing not to be trifled with!

Whether you planned to do it or not is irrelevant! /

You see now? You ought to feel all that shame you heaped on others! /

It’s high time you got a dose of your own medicine! /

Now you know what it feels like when all those girls get embarrassed by your flirtatious greetings. /

Lazwald:  A-aah … how embarrassing … don’t stare at me like that … Luna … /

Translation end!

Translation notes: I really don’t know what to do about the Japanese onomatopoeia for staring intensely. As you can see, it’s じっ or じっと. Is there an equivalent onomatopoeia word in English? And it’s not just onomatopoeia for a flirtatious stare, it can be any kind of intense stare from, “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die,” to “C’mon Chipotle guy, you can put more meat in the bowl, can’t you?” How should I get across something that’s not being spoken, but rather done? Is there a way it’s usually expressed in games in English? I hardly ever play games in English so … let me know in the comments below.

If you want to see the way Nintendo took whatever liberty they pleased with this one in the official translation, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed this conversation here.

Changelog: 8/18/2016 The above conversation was modified and edited due to the gracious feedback from Meowzette and anonf4321. In addition, one of Aqua’s lines was changed in accordance with SilentNoMore’s suggestion. Version 1.0 or the original unedited line is reproduced below:

Aqua: You do know that if you keep saying whatever comes to mind like that, one day people are just going to stop listening to anything you say?

Luna: *stares intensely*

Luna: *continues to stare intensely*

Luna: *still continues to stare intensely*

Poll: Deciding Character Names – Ruuna

In Fire Emblem If, there’s a character who’s name in Japanese is commonly transliterated Ru-u-na. If you can read Japanese, it looks like this: ルーナ.  Because of the way Japanese pronunciation for that first letter works, it can be either L or R. Also, there have been times where translators remove the ー which signifies an elongated vowel sound in Japanese and simply use one vowel instead of two and times when this has not been done.  So in Japanese ルナ (Runa) would be quick and ルーナ (Ruuna) would have a longer “u” sound, something like saying roona vs roooona. Click the link below and let me know what the name should be!

Given this, what should her name be in our Fire Emblem Fates translation?

Thanks for your participation in the poll!

Translation start:

Lazwald: Hey, Luna. Nice to see you’re as cute as ever. /

Luna: ………… /

Lazwald: What’s this? No reply? Well, even when you don’t speak, your face is adorable. /

Luna: …Lazwald. /

Luna: Seriously, all you ever do is go around saying, “You’re cute! You’re cute!” /

Lazwald: Hey, calling a girl cute is like my personal greeting. /

Luna: Are you a freaking idiot? /

This is why no one ever takes you seriously. /

Lazwald: Yeah, I know, it’s a real problem. /

Luna: Then do something about your “real problem!” /

No matter what’s going on, all you EVER do is try to seduce girls! /

You’ve not grown one bit since I met you, have you?

Lazwald: I wouldn’t say that. I like to think my flirting skills have grown. /

Luna: That can’t be called growth! On the contrary, you’ve regressed. Regressed!

Lazwald: Ahaha! /

You never change, Luna. You’ve always so high-strung and mean, even before we wound up here.

Luna: You only think that because YOU never change, Lazwald! /

Lazwald: Guilty as charged. You’re so cute when you’re angry, and that never changes either! /

How about it? Want to go out for tea after this, just the two of us?

Luna: Oh lord … It seems you’re impossible, no matter what I say to you …

Translation end!

If you want to see what Nintendo’s translation was, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed this conversation here.

Changelog: 3/25/2016 The above dialogue was edited due to helpful feedback from englishsubs4all and SilentNoMore. Thanks for helping out! For your reference, version 1.0, the originally translated lines that were edited above appear below:

Luna: That can’t be called growth! On the contrary, you’ve devolved. Devolved!

Ah Luna, always so high-strung and mean. And you’ve always been so, even before we wound up here.

Luna: On the contrary, it’s because you’ve never changed, isn’t it?

Lazwald: Quite right, quite right. And your angry face doesn’t change how cute you are!

Lazwald: I wouldn’t say that. I tend to think my flirting skills have grown.
