Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/11/2016

Here are my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/11/2016. Thanks for all your help and support! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On:

I met my goal, here are the translations and Fawful Friday articles:

Kisaragi x Velour C

Foleo x Soleil C

Foleo  x Soleil  B

Deere x Joker C

Deere x Joker B

Deere x Joker A

Kisaragi Skinship Lines

Translation: Interview with Keiko Erikawa

Translation: Games are Poison for Children?

Marx/Marks Character Name Poll

Elfie/Elfy/Elfi Character Name Poll

Today’s Goals

  • Translate as much as I can even if I can’t upload it.

Possible Complications: Holy moley! It took me about 20 tries of reloading to get this “add new post window” to finally appear and who knows how many times it will take until it actually posts it. Something in my area seems to be interfering with my internet connection, because I feel like I’m some modem computer scientists used in the 80s or something. I don’t know if it’ll get better today, but if it doesn’t, I’ll be translating in the background, so that I can upload them all in a batch once it gets better.

How you can help out: Err, pray for my internet connection? Or if you’re irreligious, vaguely hope in its direction?

Jobs I Need Done

  • I will always and forever need people to comment on my translations as much they can.
  • Vote! It’s spoiler free. If you’re waiting for the translation patch, these polls aren’t going to ruin anything for you.
  • I’m going to continue to request help for the method of doing in-page links, because nothing I’ve tried so far is working!

As always, there’s a page to discuss matter with others or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. It’s been updated to a new page for April. You can use that page for April to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and respect! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not. This page has also been updated for April.

Translation notes: Did there used to be notes here? I can’t remember if I deleted them or not, oh well. Let me know if you have any comments below!

If you want to see how Nintendo quite liberally changed the tenor of the conversation, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed that here.

Changelog: 4/13/2016 Thanks to a sharp consideration by ICL, one line has been changed. The originally translated line is reflected below for prosperity:

Deere: Dad … you’re the worst … / ディーア: ひどいぜ…\n父さん…

Translation end!

Translation notes: Deere and Joker continue to have an amusing back and forth about their abilities as butlers, fathers and sons. As you can see here, when translated more directly, both Deere and Joker are quite a bit nicer in the Japanese version.

There are two areas where I couldn’t do a word-for-word literal translation. When Joker says, “This is to calm my mental side,” what the literal Japanese means is “This is for the purpose of stabilizing my mental side.” Does anyone talk like that in English? Besides, what Joker means is that his mental state is off and he wants to settle it down, so I chose that as more natural sounding English, because I figure it’s close enough to what the Japanese really means.

As well, Joker twice uses 悔しい (kuyashii) which is a tricky word to translate as it means regret, remorse, sadness, despondency, depression, anger, resentment any of the general mental states caused by an unfortunate occurrence.  The unfortunate occurrence was his defeat to Deere, so I translated it as a feeling of defeat and then resentment later on, as I thought that would flow the best and I couldn’t see any other easily discernible emotion in the conversation other than resentment because Joker doesn’t sound angry or sad or regretful.

In any case, if I made a mistake or something needs fixing more natural English or you have a quibble about those translation decisions I made, let me about that or any other things in the comments below.

If you want to see how Nintendo quite liberally changed the tone of Deere and Joker speak to each other, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed that here.

Changelog: 4/13/2016 Made a grammar change based on feedback from Immahnoob and SpaceCaseMeg. Thanks very much to both of them. There are no original lines with changed meaning yet.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Deere x Joker C

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and remember to always thank your teddy bears.

Here’s the support conversation between Deere and Joker for the C level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Deere: Well now … all I have to do is pour it and wait … / ディーア: さてと…後は注いで持っていくだけだな…

Joker: Hey, Deere. You were making coffee too, huh? / ジョーカー: おい、ディーア。お前も珈琲を作っていたのか?

Deere: So you’ve put some on too, dad? / ディーア: もしかして、父さんも?

Joker: I’ll bring our comrades in arms the coffee I made. / ジョーカー: 仲間たちには俺が入れた珈琲を持っていく。

You get your own coffee. / お前の珈琲は自分で処理しろ。

Deere: Nah, sorry, but … I’m going to deliver the coffee to them. / ディーア: いや、悪いけど…仲間たちには俺の珈琲を届けるよ。

My coffee is … better than yours. / 俺の珈琲の方が…父さんのよりもうまいからな。

Joker: What’s this? / ジョーカー: なんだと?

Speaking up to your old man with an attitude, are we? / おまえ、父親に向かって、そんな生意気な口をきくのか?

Deere: Didn’t really mean to offend you with the way I said it … I just let the truth leave my lips … / ディーア: 別に生意気を言ってるつもりはない…事実をそのまま口に出しているだけだ…

Joker: Your coffee’s better than mine? And you’re saying that this is just the truth? / ジョーカー: お前の珈琲の方がうまい?それが事実だっていうのか?

That’s quite a careless thing to say considering you haven’t even taken the time to drink my coffee … / 俺の珈琲を飲んでもいないのに適当なことを抜かしやがって…

Deere: I don’t have to drink it to be able to tell. That smell that wafts around your coffee … / ディーア: 飲まなくてもわかるじゃん。漂ってくる珈琲の香りで…

Joker: !? / ジョーカー: !?

Deere: You know exactly what I mean, don’t you dad? Well, I’ve got to go … / ディーア: 父さんだって本当はわかってるんだろ?じゃあ、俺はもう行くから…

Joker: ………… / ジョーカー: …………

Tsk … he’s certainly got me there … / ちっ…確かにあいつの言うとおりだ…

This one time … Deere’s coffee was better than mine … / 今回に限っては…ディーアの珈琲の方が上だった…

But, it’s not going to last. Prepare yourself, Deere! / しかし、このままではすまさんぞ。覚悟していろよ、ディーア。

Translation end!

Translation notes: As you can see from my more literal translation these two are talking to each other like typical family members with an easily familiarity and there isn’t really so much animosity as there is the usual annoyance, amusement and joshing around that goes with some family relationships. There is a lot of additional context in the grammar constructions of how they talk that adds bits and pieces of meaning to the dialogue, so if you’re a beginner at Japanese, you may wonder why I translated things like that.

One of the ones that may trouble some people is the “Didn’t mean to offend you with the way I said it,” and that’s because even though Deere is use the same 生意気 (namaiki) word that means having an attitude not appropriate for your station, this construction of 言ってるつもりはない (itteru tsumori ha nai) is very commonly used as a “no offense” and you simply insert the “offending word” before it. So if someone uses words saying “you’re attacking me,” you simply insert that into that kind of construction and what it really means, “No offense, didn’t mean it that way.”

In any case, there may be some troubles with English fluency or typos or other things you might catch that might make it sound more natural. Let me know in the comments below!

If you want to see how Nintendo quite liberally changed the tenor of the conversation, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed that here.

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/9/2016

Tomorrow is Saturday! Here are my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/9/2016. Thanks again to everyone who is helping out! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

I met my goal of doing six supports and one skinship. Lots of them showed significant differences from the Treehouse versions. Here they are:

Foleo x Shigure B

Foleo x Shigure A

Joker  x Sakura  C

Joker x Sakura B

Joker x Sakura A

Joker x Sakura S

Fuuga Skinship Lines

Still haven’t gotten those polls up. Gotta do that!

Today’s Goals

  • Translate 5+ supports, some skinship and who knows what else?
  • Marx and Elfy, I’ve been neglecting you. I promise I’m going to get to your name polls soon.
  • Fawful Friday posts ahoy!

Possible Complications: Luckily, I already did quite a lot of work this morning on an emergency assignment, so I’m free for the rest of the day.

How you can help out: Since the amount of links on this site are getting crazy, if you see a broken link or something hard to navigate, please, please let me know what’s wrong. Of course, constructive criticism on translations, voting in polls, all that is welcome and solicited. You can see updates for all the changes I’m making in the Changelog.

Sakura: This is a … r-ring, right? / サクラ: これは…\nゆ、指輪でしょうか?

I-I have … all these things I want to do. / わ、私には…やりたいことがあります。
I want to help everyone who is suffering under the brunt of their wounds or maladies. /怪我や病気で困っている全ての人をこの手で助けたい。
And I think these feelings are never going to change. / この思いはずっと変わらずに持ち続けると思います。
Joker: Yes. It should be a long and dangerous road. / ジョーカー: はい。長く険しい道のりでしょうね。
Sakura: Th-that’s why if you marry me … / サクラ: だ、だから、私と結婚をしたら…
I might end up pulling you … into my troubles … / ジョーカーさんに…ご迷惑をおかけしてしまうことに…
Joker: I shall walk with you. On your long, dangerous path, Princess Sakura./ ジョーカー: 私も共に歩みましょう。サクラ王女の歩く、長く険しい道のりを。
Sakura: Joker … / サクラ: ジョーカーさん…

I want to be able to experience that happiness as I walk with you. / 私は幸せを感じながら歩むことができます。
Sakura: You’re really okay with … me? / サクラ: 私で…本当にいいのですか?
Joker: Yes. Of course. / ジョーカー: はい。もちろんです。
Sakura: Thank you. Joker. / サクラ: ありがとうございます。ジョーカーさん。
Joker: So you will marry me? / ジョーカー: 結婚していただけますね?
Sakura: Yes … to our future. / サクラ: はい…\nよろしくお願いいたします。

Translation end!

Translation notes: よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegaishimasu) can mean so many different things, like “nice to meet you,” or “I hope this will be a good business transaction” or “take care of my little sister.” It’s a lot like similar Japanese phrases, such as 気をつけて (ki wo tsukete) or だから (dakara). It generally means well wishes to some future endeavor in social interactions. Since the context of this situation is them walking that dangerous path together, I translated it here as “to our future,” as if they were doing that thing where you clink wine glasses together and say something, whatever that’s called. In any event, if you have any suggestions for improving that or any other part of the dialogue, let me know down in the comments below.

Sakura: ………… / サクラ:…………

Joker: You went there again. To those who have suffered wounds, to the side of our citizens. / ジョーカー: また行っていたのですね。怪我を負ってしまった民のところへ。

Sakura: Joker … / サクラ: ジョーカーさん…

Joker: Princess Sakura, you’re one who understands the pain of others. I have no desire to discourage your gentle ways. / ジョーカー: サクラ王女は、他人の痛みがわかるお方です。その優しさを否定する気はありません。

Sakura: Okay … / サクラ: はい…

Joker: But, if you burn yourself out, is it not putting the cart before the horse? / ジョーカー: ですが、それでサクラ王女が憔悴なさっては本末転倒ではないですか。

Please, I’m asking you to treat yourself with as much respect as the citizens you visit to help. / どうか、民への見舞いはご自重していただけるようお願いします。

Sakura: B-but … A-as a princess … my people … / サクラ: で、でも…\nわ、私は王女として…民を…

Joker: ………… / ジョーカー: …………

Allow me to deliver a harsh reality. / あえて厳しいことを言わせていただきます。

Even if you were to run all over the place tending to the wounded, Princess Sakura, you can’t heal everyone’s wounds. / サクラ王女が足繁く見舞いを続けたとしても、全ての民の傷を癒すことはできません。

Sakura: T-that is true … Even if I were to visit them … / サクラ: そ、そうですよね…私がお見舞いをしたところで…

It’s not like it will help them in the end. / あの人たちの助けにはなれないですものね。

Joker: … Unfortunately, yes. / ジョーカー: …はい。

Sakura: I-I … I just wanted to ease my conscience … / サクラ: わ、私…自分が楽になりたかったから…

Maybe that’s why I went to see t-them … / あ、あの人たちのお見舞いに行っていたのかもしれません…

I-I wanted others to say I’m looking after them as I should … / わ、私はみなさんをちゃんと気にしてるよって…

And I wanted … to think I was doing that too … / 自分で…そう思いたかったから…

Joker: Oh, Princess Sakura … / ジョーカー: サクラ王女…

Sakura: I-I’m sorry … I need to be alone for a bit … / サクラ: ご、ごめんなさい…\n少し一人にしてください…

Joker: ………… / ジョーカー: …………

Translation end!

Translation notes: In my interpretation, Joker is trying to be as kind as he possibly can to save Sakura here, but it’s to no avail as she eventually attacks herself. It’s a rather sad dialogue. That’s why I translated 厳しいこと (kibishii koto) as harsh reality, because kibishii is often used to mean strict or mean and koto can have the meaning of “reality.” Got any ideas on how to improve this? Let me hear all your constructive criticism and feedback below.

Translation end!

Translation notes: Joker is of course using polite Japanese, and at the same time Sakura isn’t impolite either, but she is a princess, so she rarely needs to address anyone as of a higher station than her and thus can afford to be a little less formal. I must admit, I had seizures trying to translation 心が持ちません (kokoro ga mochimasen), which has a lot of meanings. It can mean you’re getting depressed or you’re letting the stress get the best of you, or you’re feeling like you can’t go on. Since Joker uses a specially polite and kind form of the expression I put “pure heart” and tried to find an English expression that would allow the reader the widest variety of interpretations along those lines. Anything you think I should correct or make better? Let me know in the comments below!
