Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/7/2016

Well, it’s the second week of working on the site and here we are! Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/7/2016. As always to everyone who votes in the polls and helps in the comments. Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I did meet met my goal of getting some translation done, but less than a usual day, four support conversations, to be exact, which can be found here. If you’re interested in really messed up Treehouse translations, then you’ll want to check out Gray x Ignis support conversations especially:

Ignis x Sophie C

Ignis x Sophie B

Gray x Ignis B

Gray x Ignis A

In addition, I did end up getting to posting a poll about Byakuya Kingdom’s honorifics. Small cheers for small victories, right? Translate them into English or leave the Japanese -san, -sama, -kun suffixes? Click here to learn more and vote!

I also got a request to translate this Damonge article on the future of the game industry on the current social climate, which proved to be rather well-liked.

Today’s Goals

  • Back to normal, 5+ supports and as much Skinship as I can
  • I think I need name polls for Marx and Elfy, because I’m not sure I have their names spelled correctly.
  • In addition, I might have a surprise today. Let’s see if I can get around to it!

Possible Complications: As Rihanna sings, “Work, work, work, work! My hands really hurt, hurt, hurt, hurt!” I’m going to have to figure out how to space out typing things up since both this effort and my job both involve typing and I don’t want to hurt myself!

How you can help out: Vote! If you see polls or places where you can offer feedback, speak up! And of course I welcome any criticisms of the translation. You can see updates for all the changes I’m making in the Changelog.

Jobs I Need Done

  • As always, feedback on translations and polls is always appreciated.
  • Vote! Go to the poll page linked above and cast your vote!
  • If anybody has any idea how to do in-page links (you know how in a site like Lie-a-pedia you can go to different spots on the same page when you click a link) in WordPress, I’d appreciate a shout out with some help, because nothing I’ve tried so far is working!

As always, there’s a page to discuss matter with others or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. It’s been updated to a new page for April. You can use that page for April to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and respect! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not. This page has also been updated for April.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Gray x Ignis A

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and remember, meth is bad for you.

Here’s the support conversation between Gray and Ignis for the A level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Ignis: ………… /

Gray: Ignis … /

Ignis: What is it, Gray? /

Gray: I did say you could watch in the midst of making my sweets, but …

Since then, you’ve come to see me every time I make candy … ? /

Ignis: … Should I not?

Gray: No … it’s not that you shouldn’t. It’s just I thought you’re really into it, coming here so often without losing interest.

Ignis: There’s no way I could get over it …

The cookie cutters you use for your candy are so adorable … no matter how hard I look, it’s never enough. /

Gray: But … Candy is something that you only really understand the true fabulousness of once you eat them.

All you ever do is look, you never to try to eat, do you?

Ignis: You think … ?/

Gray: I do!

Every time, every single time, once you see them done, you just up and go away! /

It’s not that you think they look kind of disgusting to eat, but you just like looking at them, is it?

Ignis: Sorry, I don’t think that. But … I …

Gray: … ? /

Ignis: I can’t … bear it … to eat such cute things …

Gray: What the?

Ignis: Baked goods that resemble bunnies or cats … /

It’s too cruel to eat such cute things … I just can’t do it.

Gray: H-hey, hey … /

Just how much of a softie are you … you know they’re not alive, right?

They’re just a conglomerate of sugar and flour, you know?

Ignis: No, you’re wrong. Even then, I can’t. I just can’t bear it.

Gray: ………… /

Tsk … If you’re going to insist, I’m going to force them down your mouth! /

Ignis: What!?

Gray: As the maker of these sweets, if someone doesn’t eat them, I can’t enjoy the fun of making them!

Take that!

Ignis: Ack … errgg! Cat candy is coming for my mouth … !?

Gray: Look!! Come now, eat it!!/ グレイ: ほらよっ!!\nさぁ、食べろ!!

Ignis: Mmmph … !!!! *crunch* … *crunch crunch* … /

What is this fragrant and lovely sweetness … so this is the taste of baked sweets? /

Gray: Yep. How is it, good?

Y-yes. It’s good. That’s all I can say. /

I must apologize to the little kitty who lost its life in my mouth … /

Gray, your talent is something else. /

Gray: Hehehe. I accept your compliments gratefully. /

Well, I’ve now had a good lesson in just how nice of a person you are, Ignis. /

Here’s to you, Ignis. /

Ignis: Yeah, the same to you …

Translation end!

Translation notes: So … is anyone else reading a little subtext into this conversation or is that just my interpretation? I know the Fire Emblem developers and writers love to write in these sorts of scenes that inflame the minds of their fans, but this one in particular seems really on the nose obvious and not subtle at all. What do you think? Any comments on the translation or English fluency? Let me know in the comments below! (Now I know why YouTubers love saying that all the time, it’s addictive.)

If you want to see the climax of Nintendo’s ridiculously liberal official translation, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed that here.

Changelog: None yet.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Gray x Ignis B

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and don’t you meme me, young man.

Here’s the support conversation between Gray and Ignis for the B level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Gray: Nice, I’ve got some good dough this time. Today’s baked sweets are going to be great, no if, ands or buts about it.

Now to cut out the shape … /

Hm? Who’s standing there …

Ignis: … It’s me, Ignis. /

Gray: You again! /

Ignis: Yep. /

………… / …………

Gray: Hey, why are you standing there like that? If you want candy, just say it.

No worries, I’m not going to laugh at an adult man who wants sweet things. /

On the contrary, I’d greatly welcome it.

Ignis: Nah … I don’t really want candy. /

Gray: You say that, isn’t that your gaze looking at my candy like it’s going to disappear. /

If you’ve got some other reason for that, then tell me. I’m not fond of being stared at.

I, it’s … I want to see the shapes of your candy.

Gray: … The shapes? / 形?

Ignis: Yeah. The protection charms and stuffed animals I have …

The candy you make … it looks a lot like them. That’s why I can’t take my eyes off of it.

Gray: So it’s basically that … you like cute, small things,/

And the candy I create reminds you of it so it’s been on your mind?/

Ignis: … Yep. /

Gray: O-of course. /

Now that you mention it, my baked sweets do take on the form of animals and they’re often shapes like trees and fruit. /

And I am making these out of a rabbit cookie cutter … /

Ignis: Yeah, that rabbit … is very cute and cuddly … /

Gray: Sheesh, if that’s what it was all about, you should have just come out with it. I’d show you my cookie cutters any time.

Ignis: But, an adult man expressing interest in cute things is said to be …

Well it’s something you wouldn’t want to show in open society. /

Gray: What does it matter, really? Even adult men can love candy or cute little things.

I said it before, but I’m not going to laugh at you over things like that.

Ignis: Really … /

Gray: Yeah, if you like cute things, take your time to come and look at them as much as you like!

You can appreciate the art of my finished sweet masterpieces until you’re satisfied. /

Look, I’m going to use the rabbit cookie cutter! /

Ignis: …oh, ooooh … /

The dough got shaped into a rabbit … It’s so adorable …

Translation end!

Translation notes: The type of Japanese the Gray uses tends to have a lot of phrases that overlap so it’s hard to translate sometimes without making it sound overly wordy when it isn’t really so much in the Japanese. I wonder if I could do better on that front. Got some criticism or comments? Let me know in the comments below

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/4/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/2/2016.  Eternal gratitude to all the people who have reached out in support! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I met my goal of translating a lot of support conversations, six to be exact, and another skinship dialogue list! Ryan’s got his groove back, baby! You can find them below:

Elfy x Elise C

Elfy x Elise B

Elfy x Elise A

Camilla x Odin C

Elfy x Zero C

Gray x Ignis C

Deere’s Skinship Dialogue List

As well, with Fawful Friday, I posted two past articles/translations I did: one, a summary of Japan Parliament member Taro Yamada’s response to the UN’s latest attack on free speech within manga, anime and games in Japan, and the other an older translated article about the Fire Emblem Fates localization controversy.

The last Fawful Friday article, a translation of an extremely long Star Ocean 5 interview at 4Gamer was so long I couldn’t finish it. Paying work got in the way and if the stars align, it should be done today, so check back this even if you were looking forward to that.

Today’s Goals

  • 5+ support conversations
  • Start doing some more Skinship dialogue for the translation patch team
  • Respond to feedback and update translations with corrections

Possible Complications: Work.

How you can help out: Of course, I always need help from English speakers to improve the English fluency in my translations. Perhaps there’s nothing you can suggest to improve? Even posting “This one looks okay” on a page with no comments will help me out, so if you’ve got a few spare moments, help me out! You can see updates for all the changes I’m making in the Changelog.

Jobs I Need Done

  • Know a Fire Emblem fan who would appreciate this place? Know somebody who wants to read accurate information about Japan or request it? Spread the word! I need all the eyes I can get.
  • As always, feedback on translations and polls is always appreciated.
  • On the Project Help page a discussion has been started about translating honorifics for Byakuya Kingdom’s characters, since they ostensibly take place in a fictional Japan. Go there (link right below this) and lend your thoughts to the conversation. I’ll of course change to whatever the strongest consensus is.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Gray x Ignis C

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and don’t you meme me, young man.

Here’s the support conversation between Gray and Ignis for the C level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Gray: Okay, now if I just mix up the eggs and add some sugar … /

Gray: Hm … I feel a presence. Hey, who’s there?

Ignis: It’s me, Ignis. /

Gray: Tsk, don’t surprise me like that. What do you want? /

Ignis: Nothing. /

Gray: There’s no way you want nothing. I can feel that incredibly intense stare of yours. /

Gray: Ah, I see, I think you were drawn here by the rich smells of baking sweets. /

But it’s going to take a little while till its done. Wait your turn. /

Ignis: No … I don’t particularly want to eat your sweets. /

Gray: Oh? Then what?

Maybe you came to get some of the other provisions in the kitchen? /

Ignis: Nope … not for that either. /

Gray: Then WHAT is it? If you’re just passing through, there’s no need to stand there looking intimidating, is there?

Ignis: Ah, you’re right … sorry I bothered you …

Gray: ………… /

His gaze was very obviously directed toward my sweets, but …

Maybe he’s got a surprising amount of willpower? Or maybe there’s something else going on?

Translation end!

Translation notes: I’ve said this in a comment elsewhere in response to some very observant criticism, but sometimes the question mark in Japanese is just used to denote somebody wondering or not sure about something and doesn’t actually translate into a question, so that’s why sometimes you see I’ve translated it as a statement and not as a question, as in several cases in this conversation.

If you want to see the goofy Nintendo translation, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed the official translation of this conversation here.

Changelog: 4/6/2016 Due to brain feedback from RyanoftheStars, the misspellings of Ignis’s name have been corrected.

(Nintendo owns the copyright to Fire Emblem Fates/ Fire Emblem if and all material on this site is provided under fair use.)
