Poll: Deciding Character Names – Elfy/Elfi/Elfie

As explained in a similar poll about Marx/Marks, the code/text dump for the Japanese version of Fire Emblem Fates has some English spellings of the character’s names in it and I’ve largely been going by this to decide on how to transliterate their names in times of doubt. This is largely why you see me refer to ディーア as Deere, even though other translations make him into Dia, or the official translation puts him as Dwyer. The actual official code calls him Deere, so I consider that the most official and accurate source. That is after all how you would approximate a name like Deere in Japanese.

With エルフィ however, it’s a little difficult. Using the convention of names in English and the rules of English spelling, a multi-syllabic word that has the sound of “ee” is most often spelled with a “y,” or even sometimes “ey” and much less often spelled with “i.” When it is, it is often spelled with “ie,” such Richie, Cassie, Louie or Charlie. You’re much more likely to see Jenny, Mikey, Danny, Mickey, Mary, Bobby, Johnny, Betty and so on. That’s why I translated it as Elfy. But in the code, she’s referred to as Elfi. Treehouse translated it as Effie, which is altogether different, because it gets rid of the L sound.

As with Marks/Marx, did the primarily non-English speaking coders and developers at Intelligent Systems just make a simple mistake or is that the way it should be? Should it be transliterated as Elfi, Elfy or maybe a compromise of Elfie to go along with the Charlie-type names?

Please vote in this poll and let me know which one you think is the most appropriate.

Or let me know in the comments below if you have a different idea or some reason for your decision that you think should be taken into account. Keep in mind, there is no option to keep it as Effie, because we’re not here to repeat Treehouse’s mistakes.

Today’s Goals and Jobs – 4/4/2016

Here my goals and the jobs I’m working on for 4/2/2016.  Eternal gratitude to all the people who have reached out in support! Remember to follow me on Twitter to get more updates.

What’s Going On

I met my goal of translating a lot of support conversations, six to be exact, and another skinship dialogue list! Ryan’s got his groove back, baby! You can find them below:

Elfy x Elise C

Elfy x Elise B

Elfy x Elise A

Camilla x Odin C

Elfy x Zero C

Gray x Ignis C

Deere’s Skinship Dialogue List

As well, with Fawful Friday, I posted two past articles/translations I did: one, a summary of Japan Parliament member Taro Yamada’s response to the UN’s latest attack on free speech within manga, anime and games in Japan, and the other an older translated article about the Fire Emblem Fates localization controversy.

The last Fawful Friday article, a translation of an extremely long Star Ocean 5 interview at 4Gamer was so long I couldn’t finish it. Paying work got in the way and if the stars align, it should be done today, so check back this even if you were looking forward to that.

Today’s Goals

  • 5+ support conversations
  • Start doing some more Skinship dialogue for the translation patch team
  • Respond to feedback and update translations with corrections

Possible Complications: Work.

How you can help out: Of course, I always need help from English speakers to improve the English fluency in my translations. Perhaps there’s nothing you can suggest to improve? Even posting “This one looks okay” on a page with no comments will help me out, so if you’ve got a few spare moments, help me out! You can see updates for all the changes I’m making in the Changelog.

Jobs I Need Done

  • Know a Fire Emblem fan who would appreciate this place? Know somebody who wants to read accurate information about Japan or request it? Spread the word! I need all the eyes I can get.
  • As always, feedback on translations and polls is always appreciated.
  • On the Project Help page a discussion has been started about translating honorifics for Byakuya Kingdom’s characters, since they ostensibly take place in a fictional Japan. Go there (link right below this) and lend your thoughts to the conversation. I’ll of course change to whatever the strongest consensus is.

As always, there’s a page to discuss matter with others or contact me about how they’d like to help out with the Fire Emblem Fates project. It’s been updated to a new page for April. You can use that page for April to discuss things with other members in a more general nature. Thank you for all the people who contacted me or contributed so far! Much love and respect! As well, don’t forget there’s also a page for you to request any kind of Japanese information you need, regardless of whether it’s about Fire Emblem Fates or not. This page has also been updated for April.

Translation start:

Zero: Oh, it’s you, Elfy. / ゼロ: なんだ、エルフィ。

Elfy: Sit, right there. / エルフィ: そこに座って。

Zero: ………… / ゼロ: …………

What’s up with you? That cold gleam in your eyes … kind of freaks me out. / いったいどうしたんだ。その冷たい眼光…なんだかゾクゾクしちまうな。

Elfy: I have no idea what you’re talking about … / エルフィ: 何を言っているかわからないわ…

But truly, the reason I’ve called you here is the way you talk … / でも、あなたを呼んだのは、まさにその言葉遣いのことなの。

Zero: The way I talk. / ゼロ: 言葉遣い?

Elfy: You … seem to be teaching Lady Elise some strange slang. / エルフィ: あなた…エリーゼ様におかしなしゃべり方を教えているみたいね。

Zero: … I wouldn’t say that. / ゼロ: …いいや。

Elfy: It’s useless to play the fool, you know. / エルフィ: とぼけても無駄よ。

We have eyewitness accounts from all sorts of people … we have proof. / いろんな人から目撃情報が入っているし…証拠もあるの。

And recently, Lady Elise used your kind of language in front of me as well. / 最近、エリーゼ様がわたしの前であなたみたいな言葉遣いをすることがあるから。

Zero: My kind of language? / ゼロ: 俺みたいな言葉遣い?

Elfy: That’s right. To list some examples … / エルフィ: そうよ。例えば…

“Lately, I’m so sexy …”/ 「最近ね、あたしいやらしいの」とか…

Even when heading out to battle … / 出撃時なんかも…

“I’ll give you a special treat, baby …” / 「あたしがイイことしてあげるからね」とか…

… What else could it be but your influence? / …どう見てもあなたの影響よね。

Zero: … I wonder? / ゼロ: …さあな?

Elfy: I’m going to tell it to you straight. Stop teaching Lady Elise about your bizarre way of talking. / エルフィ: はっきり言っておくわ。エリーゼ様に、妙な言葉遣いを教えないで。

Zero: ………… / ゼロ: …………

And if I say no? / 嫌だと言ったら?

Elfy: … You’ll have to deal with this. / エルフィ: …こうなるわ。

Zero: !! Crushing an apple with one hand … you’re … / ゼロ: !! こいつ…リンゴを片手で粉々にしやがった…

Elfy: The next time you try to use your strange slang in front of Lady Elise … / エルフィ: 次にエリーゼ様の前で変な言葉を使ってみなさい…

You’ll get crushed into sauce like that apple … / あなた、このリンゴのようにぐちゃぐちゃになるわよ…

Translation end!

Translation notes: I’m not sure how to translate “gucha gucha” which is another Japanese onomatopoeia word, but it does mean mushy and slimy, so I thought apple sauce might be a good match. What do you think? Any other improvements I can make? Typos? Grammar mistakes? Let me know in the comments below.

I’ll not get to play with Elfy again, I thought. / もう、これでエルフィとは遊べなくなるかもって。

Elfy: Yeah … your highness and I are too far apart in social class … / エルフィ: そうね…王女様とわたしでは身分が違いすぎるから…

After a couple of years, you became a castle soldier and came to see me. / 数年後に王城兵としてまた、あたしに会いにきてくれた。

Elfy: Well, that’s because I wanted to see you again … / エルフィ: だって、どうしても会いたかったから…

Elise: But, becoming a castle soldier in order to do that … usually, that’s unthinkable. / エリーゼ: でも、そのために王城兵に志願するなんて…普通、考えないわ。

Elfy: I trained like a wild animal to be accepted as a castle soldier. / エルフィ: 王城兵に採用されるために猛特訓したわ。

I lifted boulders while being hit by waterfall spray … I ran against stream in rivers … / 滝に打たれながら岩を持ち上げたり…川の流れに逆らって走ったり…

Elise: Y-you did that much … / エリーゼ: そ、そんなことまでしたんだ…

Elfy: Of course … if you’ll let me, I’ll be by your side forever … / エルフィ: もちろんよ…ずっと側にいさせてね…

Elise … I will protect you no matter what … / エリーゼは…わたしが絶対に守るから…

Translation end!

Translation notes: Again, pretty straight forward. But perhaps you have some suggestions for improvement. Let me know in the comments below!

Elfy: Oh, this isn’t ok? … But you’re just the right weight … / エルフィ: そうですか…ちょうどいい重さなんですが…

Well then, I shall put you down … please watch your feet … / では、下ろしますね…足元にお気をつけください…

Elise: Speaking of that, it’s just the two of us today … no need for formal language. / エリーゼ: というか、今は二人きりなんだから…敬語じゃなくてもいいんだよ?

Elfy: … Got it. / エルフィ: …わかったわ。

Elise: Ehehe. / エリーゼ: えへへ。

Remember when the two of us met? / ねえ、あたしたちが出会ったときのことを憶えてる?

Elfy: Yes, of course … / エルフィ: ええ、もちろん…

Elise: I had slipped out of the castle walls … / エリーゼ: あたしはお城を抜け出して…

Elfy: You came to the slums I lived at to play ninja. / エルフィ: わたしが住む地下街にお忍びで遊びにきたのよね。

Elise: Yeah, you remember. I so wanted a normal friend. / エリーゼ: そうそう。あたし、普通のお友だちが欲しかったから。

Elfy: I totally didn’t notice … / エルフィ: 全然、気づかなかったわ…

Elfy: You’re right … I think we wouldn’t have noticed … / エルフィ: そうね…気づかなかったと思うわ…

Then, some tough chump royal guards came bumbling into our play and I tried to protect you, but … / あの時、ガラの悪い衛兵が絡んできてエリーゼを守ろうとしたんだけど…

Of course it was impossible for a child’s strength to out do them … and I was about to be led away by the two of them … / やっぱり子供の力では無理で…二人とも連れ去られそうになって…

But then, you revealed your stature, for me … / でも、そのときエリーゼが自分の身分を明かしてくれた…

Elise: Ehehe. Those horrible royal guards went green in the face. / エリーゼ: うふふ。あの悪い衛兵さん、顔が真っ青になってたね。

Elfy: And I won’t ever let you face such danger again. I will absolutely protect you … / エルフィ: もう、エリーゼをあんな目には遭わせない。わたしが絶対に守るから…

Elise: Thanks, Elfy. / エリーゼ: ありがとう。エルフィ。

Translation end!

Translation notes: Not much to say about this one, other than some of the story about the guards was tricky to find appropriate English expressions for. Do you have some good suggestions? Let me know in the comments below.

Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Elfy x Elise C

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and when the night is young, don’t sexualize it.

Here’s the support conversation between Elfy and Elise for the C level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Comments? Questions? Criticisms? Want to let me if I made a typo or if a better approach would work somewhere? Let me know in the comments below.

Translation start:

Elise: Elfy! Let’s go out for a walk! / エリーゼ: エルフィ!お散歩に行こうよ!

Elfy: *munch munch* … *munch munch munch* … / エルフィ: もぐもぐ…もぐもぐもぐ…

Elise: Jeez! You going to keep feeding your face forever? / エリーゼ: もう!いつまでご飯を食べてるの?

Elfy: Now matter how I eat … I never get full … / エルフィ: いくら食べても…お腹がいっぱいにならなくて…

Elise: Elfy, you’re training too much. That’s why you’re always hungry. / エリーゼ: エルフィは訓練のし過ぎよ。だから、そんなにお腹が空くんだよ。

Elfy: But, if I don’t train … I’ll never get strong … / エルフィ: ですが、訓練をしないと…強くなれませんから…

Elise: Well I think you’re strong enough, Elfy. / エリーゼ: エルフィはもう充分、強いと思うけどな。

Elfy: I still can’t let myself bring down my guard. / エルフィ: まだまだ油断はできません。

In order to protect you, I have to attain the kind of strength that won’t lose to anyway … / わたしはエリーゼ様を守るために誰にも負けない力を身に付けなくては…

Elise: Thank you, Elfy. / エリーゼ: ありがとう、エルフィ。

But if you eat so much, when it comes down to the fateful moment, what if you’re so heavy you can’t move? / でも、そんなに食べちゃってたら、いざというときに体が重くて動かないよ?

Elfy: … You’ve got a point. I already feel like I can’t move. / エルフィ: …確かにそうですね。\nもう、動けそうにありません。

Elise: No! Then you can’t go for a walk? / エリーゼ: ええ~!?じゃあ、お散歩には行けないの?

Elfy: It’ll be okay. I can probably keep up if I roll along. / エルフィ: 大丈夫です。\n転がっていけばなんとかなりますから。

Elise: *sigh* … I guess our walk is canceled … / エリーゼ: はぁ…お散歩は中止だね…

Translation end!

Translation notes: Elise is being a little more rude than you’d expect from a literal translation of ごはんを食べる (gohan wo taberu), but I’m not sure it’s so rude as “feed your face,” is there something a little less rude, but still kind of an inconsiderate expression I can use? Let me know about this and anything else I can improve for the translation in the comments below.
