Fire Emblem Fates Support Conversation: Eponine x Zero C

Please Note: The following material obviously spoils some of the story of Fire Emblem Fates. Please read responsibly at your own risk and Chrono Trigger is an eternal 10/10 game.

Here’s the support conversation between Eponine and Zero for the C level. (Original Japanese is included for reference and better transparency.)

Translation start:

Zero: Eponine. You got a minute? /

Eponine: … What is it?

Zero: I forbid you from playing at being a noble thief any longer. /

Eponine: This old talk again? I’ll do what I please. /

Zero: Hey hey, this isn’t some small thing we’re talking about here. We’re talking about the act of stealing from people!

I don’t want you doing things like that, absolutely not.

Eponine: You did it yourself, didn’t you, father? Why shouldn’t I?

Zero: In my case there were extenuating circumstances and I couldn’t stop. /

Eponine: I’m doing what I think is right.

You’ve no good argument to tell me what to do, father. /

Zero: *sigh* … Why do things have to be like this …

You used to be such a good, cute child who listened to what your were told … /

Well, at least you’re still a cute kid. /

Eponine: Ick! Stop it with the embarrassing comments! /

Let’s make this clear … /

I don’t really like you all that much father. /

Zero: Eponine … /

Eponine: … Ooh, will you look at that? That cool face can show hurt. /

But I think nothing of it.

Anyway, I don’t want you butting into my life and telling me how to live anymore! /

Zero: ………… /

Translation end!

Translation notes: Clearly, this is a case of the writers going after a scene about father and daughter problems due to adolescence.  There are three places where I’d like to note here. First of all, when Eponine says what her father told her about being cute is 気持ち悪い (kimochiwarui), I interpreted it as her saying it’s embarrassing to hear that from her father, as this is often one of the uses of the term, kind of as a “Stop it, that’s embarrassing.” You will often, often, often hear kids say this to their parents if they kiss them on the cheek when they’re older or express affection toward them. I know I’ve said it in nearly the exact same way to my father before.

Second and third come when she’s talking about her fathers face showing how hurt he was from the comment. First, while she didn’t directly say, “will you look at that?” that’s often what’s meant for the onomatopoeia of the word, kind of like, “Gotcha, I got the upper hand.” Is there a better way of translating that nuance? Next, I added “cool” to face because the 顔 (kao) or face is emphasized with katakana here and that usually means someone is criticizing the way that part of them is usually seen or interpreted or referencing how it looks. Since Zero usually has such a “cool” demeanor, that’s what I put in there.

Any ideas on how to improve the translation? Any mistakes I made? Let me know in the comments below!

If you want to see how Nintendo just decided to make a bunch up of dialogue rather than translate what’s there, the Fire Emblem fans at Serene’s Forest have transcribed the official translation here.
