Translation start:

Nishiki:  Hey Aqua, how’s it going? /

Aqua: Greetings. /

Nishiki: What’s this? You’ve got quite a grim look on your face. /

Just looking at you makes me feel like the air around us is fraught with tension. Are you worrying about something? /

Aqua: Nothing’s wrong … really this is how I always am.

Nishiki: Ooh, I wish I could project that feeling just by being myself. /

Perhaps it’s because I lived so peacefully in my village for such a long time, / ボクは長い間、里で平和に暮らしてたせいか、

because even when I’m jumping into the fray of war like this, people just think I’ve got no sense of the gravity of the situation.

Aqua: Now that you mention it, you always seem like you go about life so joyfully. /

Nishiki: Ahaha, so that’s how people see me, huh? /

I’ve got to be careful not to come across as some sort of hippie fox. /

Aqua: I don’t know, don’t you think you’re better off like that? Here I’m wishing I could come off as amicable as you are!

Nishiki: R-really? /

It makes me happy to hear that. So happy that my tail just starts wagging on its own. Ah ha ha … ha. /

Aqua: ………… /

Nishiki: Aqua? Aqua … what’s the matter all of a sudden?

Aqua: …Oh, uh, no. Nothing, nothing at all. I started thinking about your big tail and … just lost myself.

Nishiki: Oh, is that it? Humans rarely see such a splendid tail, it’s true. /

I got all flustered because I thought you were glaring at me.

Well, I should go. See you later, Aqua. /

Aqua: Yes. /

Nishiki: Whew … Aqua’s so great. Always cool and calm, with that serious air about her.

If I could be seen as cool and calm as her, I would be even an more beautiful fox.  /

Aqua: ………… /

Nishiki: Whoa! Whoa! /

What the? Aqua, what’s going on? I thought you had just gone that way …

Aqua: Oh? … I, no, well … for a minute there, I-I guess I lost my way.

Nishiki: Oh, if that’s what it was, okay. /

Aqua: Yeah, that’s what it was … sorry … !! /

Nishiki: I wonder what that was all about … ? She was looking pretty agitated there …

Translation end!

Translation notes:  The big one here is not so much the language, but the cultural context. This whole set of support conversations hinges on the idea that foxes in Japanese folklore are magical and especially their tails. There’s a lot of myth and folklore about fox tails. In general, foxes entrance humans, but if you catch their tail, their true identities will be revealed. Since Nishiki really is a fox creature, catching his tail won’t do anything, but the general outline of the folklore is still maintained. Think of it as how sometimes the image of a little girl in a red riding hood in the forest is maintained, but the specifics are thrown out, that’s how these play out in the Japanese, so one has to keep that in mind when translating. Got some comments on how to improve this? Let me know in the comments below!

If you want to see how Nintendo completely nixed the folklore out of this series of conversation, head on over to Serene’s Forest, where the Fire Emblem fans have transcribed this conversation.
